I wanted to upgrade the stereo system to be compatible with apple play and Android auto. Touch screen capable. Bluetooth connectivity. Retain steering wheel controls. I ended up installing an Alpine Halo 9. In order to make this work I had to lower the AC and fog light control units down one step each while installing the radio unit in the top din. Everything works as it should and all controls are accessible at all times. The shifter is not impeded in any way. Note: this will look a lot better when the old nav unit is replaced with the three analog gauge setup - next on my to do list.
That's the 1st improvement that I've seen that really looks good! Now when you finish it off with the "Real Gauge" System in the dash and you will have it!
Please give us more on the installation....Photos of how you connected the screen etc.
I'm sorry but I can't help on the installation part...I had it done at the local Al & Ed's car audio shop. The screen itself is about $1000 and they charged $500 for the install. They said it was relatively straightforward. I will add that I have fully functional front and rear view cameras installed. Neither are readily visible unless you really look for them. The rear view camera uses the wiring that existed for the back up sensors. The front camera has new wiring. Rear camera engages automatically when in reverse. The front camera only engages if you select it on the touch screen.
Looks good! I just picked up a 7" Samsung Tab A to see how I can fit that in. That also gives me a GPS for running TomTom maps for Nav. Music and Nav. all in one place😁
I think it takes all the charm away, but it is your car and I understand why you went that way. Is there not something smaller that can just go in front of the screen?
Sure it's not for everyone, but it makes the car fully functional with integrated phone, audio, map, messaging, etc. All the controls still work and are accessible. The steering wheel controls still work. And it gives me front and rear camera. Best of all it can all be reversed and put back to original if necessary. For me it's the right solution. Just about any new car has a similar setup.
There have been several ideas using smaller screens that replace the current one but this idea is by far the best idea I've seen yet! Also, by putting in the 3 Gauges in place of the original screen, I feel it really modernizes the install....
It looks like Nalle is going to try this new idea.......I think it is very modern looking and I'm probably going to look farther into it!
So, I like to keep the car "originaL". By using a standard dash mount, I can use either an Iphone or, for longer trips, I use my 7" Samsung for a better map picture. Even the larger Samsung does not cover/hide any other controls. The nice part with the Samsung is that it has an internal GPS receiver and, with an SD Card, I have all US and Canada maps right there, And, if I want to look original, I just unclip it
Also, my JAGCD-HF works great for Bluetooth music streaming from either the Iphone or the Samsung. Even handsfree calling with the Iphone.

Hi.
Some years ago i tried experimenting with a 7" tab, as i could see the potential of video calling. had to modify the dash panel to suit.
sadly, the video calling wasn't practical, and the boot up time was too long, but the potential was there.
Waz, what GPS app are you using, no don't tell me. Waze. LOL, LOL, LOL.
Wasn't really into Stevie "i haven't had a hit for years" Wonder.
more a Numan fan myself.

Have done this mod on my 2004 XK8, you just replace the screen from the satnav with the mounting plate and you can then choose whichever SatNav you want to use. Quite straight forward and the switches around the satnav still iluminate. It is easily reversible and the satnav demounts so that you can update it. A bit expensive but I think worth it. Keith
