Well I put my order in for the switch with Jaguar with the Winnipeg dealership 14 days ago, still no switch. Brutal for a common part that is $235 and cost them about $20. To sum this up my trans in D suddenly would not shift. On the manual side of the J it shifts fine. When in 3 or 4 it will shift up and from 5 to D manually it will also shift. If I quickly tap the pedal while in D it will often shift. Again it happened suddenly so I doubt its fluid and am really hoping when the switch does show its the fix Ive been waiting for. I have fully charged the battery so that doesn tseem to be the issue.

What you describe points 100% to the adjustment on the trigger of the brake switch.

The ratchet/teeth are in the area highlighted in blue. The purpose is to hold the angle highlighted in black.

Thank you!! You are the second person to suggest this so I have my fingers crossed. Also have the cruise unavailable and check light message which I understand is also do to the switch.. On my switch there is nothing holding the teeth so Im assuming they broke off causing the problem. Im handy to fix these things but not a mech, is there any harm driving in manual until my switch shows? Would it shift if I removed the switch?

Default Do not remove the brake switch

I’ve never had this problem, but I would consider it never a good idea to remove the brake pedal switch and drive.... in any condition .... in any car....

If car moves in manual , drive it like that and leave the defective brake switch alone until the new part arrives. Then swap it out.

For one thing, without the brake switch you’ll struggle to get out of P - Park.

A big thanks to Mr Fmertz for saving years off my life releiving stress with his correct assessment of a brake switch over the thought of a serious tranmission failure. Replaed on arrival of switch yesterday and I now have an auto transmission. However when I punch it at times it will hit 6000 and I have to pull off gas for it to shift. I still have "cruise unavailable" , from my reading of forums when I test the battery Im sure the voltage isnt where it should be, i beleive 12.5 volts. I have also seen many threads on replacing the switch on the forums, I did not go through the hood, I removed the 1 8mm bolt and just took the switch without the casing and then replaced with new one. Im not a mechanic but handy and at 6' 190lbs it was tight but still doable in and out in 15 minutes. Also to note I thought I would call the dealership and get a quote for a trans drain and fill just to be safe as many have written to do this with a 2005 and 48000 kms. The dealership would not quote it and said its a maintenance free transmission. I will have the volts checked Monday and will update.

Sadly, some are still peddling the 'sealed for life' (death) BS. I would do a filter/fluid change based on age alone. Quite a few here have moved from the ZF liquid gold to Mercon SP, and I have not read of any negative outcomes.

My thought is it can only help. Any chance you know how many litres the 05 xk8 takes? If I take it to a private garage they will not be sure.

The ZF 6HP26 will take about 6 or 7 liters of the Lifeguard 6 or Mercon SP.

Amazon has cases.
Amazon Amazon

Do the sleeve and pan/filter.

This video of Rev. Sam's will show you the procedure. For a drain and fill you will need 7-8 quarts:

Consider changing the connector sleeve 'while you're in there'

You still need to mess with the adjustment/ratchet part of the switch to make sure it makes contact with the pedal stem when the brake pedal is at rest. It is a bit faint, but the switches can be heard clicking when engaged. In other words, the brake pedal stem needs to engage the switches when the brake pedal is at rest. The switches then need to click again as soon as you press on the brake pedal. With engine off and windows rolled up, you should be able to hear them pretty clearly click on and off as you press and release the brakes.

Other possibility is that there is some play in the brake pedal somehow, and the pedal moving around makes it miss the switches sometimes. Should be easy to check by hand.

In this situation, the rule seem to be that the transmission will not upshift if it "thinks" you have your foot on the brakes. It only knows that from reading the status of the brake switch.

Best of luck, keep us posted.

Well happy Saturday problem solved! I want to share the sympoms so no yone else will go through what I did. fmertz nailed this from the start with the brake switch, I actually found one at a wrecker and installed the switch. Transmission did shift better but at times took to 5000 RPM's which just isnt right. Cruise Unavailble still came on and cruise not working. This AM I broke down and gave the dealership $236 Canadian which is actually cheaper than EBAY and after installing the car shifts perfectly and the cruise works. The stress of the last month wasnt worth the $236 and should have bought a new switch from the start with fmertz advice. It samazing the symptoms thsi switch causes and I can see an owner just trashing their car with a bad switch. Beware of this when buying from a wrecker.
