My original transmission finally went at 128,300 miles in a park at midnight 3 miles from my house. Shifted from park to reverse and lots of clunks, car was very hesitant to move. Tried putting it in drive, clunking ensued. Guess it had a good run.

Sorry to hear about the blown gearbox. Was it a ZF5HP24 and were there any warning signs.
Did you have to walk home at night?
What’s the plan now? Rebuild or find a reconditioned gearbox? Lots of different stories from forum members with both good and bad outcomes.
Let us us know what you decide.
It was, it shifted progressively harsher, nothing too out of the ordinary. Same as a few new cars with ~100,000 miles I've driven. Sometimes it would sort of fall out of gear, into a lower gear and then back up when trying to upshift, but again things you'd expect from age. I've just heard that when the transmission cooler lines were removed to replace the radiator a few days ago the fluid was black and burnt though. I'm going to replace it with a rebuilt unit somebody put a deposit on and never picked up, savings!
Sorry to hear it. I just went through the pain having it rebuilt on my MY 98 after 90K on my way to work. I only had to walk about 2.5 miles on the one day I forgot my phone and watched my wife drive past on her way to work as I waved frantically. I will say it provided a wonderful opportunity to access, repair/replace a wonderful multitude of other parts and pieces kindly offering the pleasure of spending a few thousand more.
Sorry to hear it... that is probably the dreaded A-Drum failure. I always feared that as well and figured I would do an LS swap when it went... but my motor went first at 38k miles.
Yep, and it merrily spread metal throughout the trans with a nice deposit in the torque converter. It sure was a fun experience. This happened after replacing fuel delivery parts, and a lot of other "stuff". The engine is working well though. The previous owner replaced the fuel pump solinod, timing chain tensioners and a few other of the "typical" failures. It was been "Fault" free now for a month and running well. Happy Jag owner once again.

I've replaced my motor too with an essentially new one, had a low milage example completely rebuilt. My car is essentially new at this point, engine, trans, exhaust, wheels, tires, brakes, WHOLE cooling system including radiator, spark plugs, coils, injectors, numerous modules, pretty much the whole hydraulic system. Hopefully I'm done for a while. My mechanic made an LS-swapped XK8 for himself, beautiful black convertible, slammed, 6 speed Tremec manual, James Bond vents, etc. Fun car, I think the swap cost him $16,000, not sure I'd want it as a daily. It's my dream to have a Jaguar Racing Green LS-swapped track car. Someday I get my car back on Thursday, $2500 isn't bad considering it was shifting poorly anyway. I'm really excited. Tranny comes from my mechanic's car, it only has 1,000 miles on it since he LS swapped it, really good deal.
I too have an automatic with roughly 25k miles on a $7k rebuild from my LS replacement. Actually I have the whole engine, trans and all accessories....see Market section
