Unhappy Transmission Fault

Hi,

It just seems to be one thing after another with this car and now the worst yet. I am getting a transmission fault light and when I try to engage drive there is a terrible clunk as I come through reverse. My garage has diagnosed faulty electrovalves in the gearbox. I have no experience of auto boxes. I have two options, source a second hand box from the UK breaker (car is in SW France) or buy new. My worry is that I get a SH box and transport it to SW France and it does not fit, I know that there was a change according to the SNG parts catalogue.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Regards

Matthew,

There's four automatic gearbox Part Numbers listed for the early NA XK8:

(click on the image to enlarge it)

These are possibly only minor build spec changes. Hopefully someone here will have precise information on this.

Your options are:

1. rebuild (locally or back in the UK)
2. replace (new / used / rebuilt)

With a failed transmission, I normally wouldn't hesitate to replace with a used transmission from one of our specialist Jaguar breakers because they all offer a guarantee and it's the lowest cost option by a long stretch.

A rebuild of your own box will be costly and a new transmission would far exceed the current value of the car.

Geography complicates the issue. With the car in SW France, bringing it back to the UK will be expensive unless you have Continental breakdown cover. I have a recollection from previous posts that you have it insured on a French policy so this probably won't apply.

Specialist breakers deliver all over the World and getting a transmission delivered to France won't be difficult or too costly. The gamble is, if it goes wrong, you'd be left with the return shipping costs.

low fluid will make the valves less precise in function, check the level before you consider a rebuild. You may just need a top off and hard reset.

I've seen techs charge a full rebuild but just replace the electric part, if they see the bands are ok.

We dont even know the year make and model of your car, its not in your signature.

But here is one near your car

Default Transmission Fault

Hi Graham,

You are perfectly correct, the cost of a transmission from SNG is £3174 plus VAT and a supplement of £500 until I return the used box. I have dealt with Trevor at Penge jags on several occasions and he seems a trustworthy type. he can supply a transmission fof a reasonable price but the cost of getting it out to France is almost as much as the cost of the box. Fortunately we are selling our flat in London and moving most of our furniture her and the removal people wer in today to provide a quote. When we get this I will contact him to see if he could include the box. My garage here in France does not recommend getting it rebuilt here as they have had to send some back after being fitted. Is it an engine out job or can the box be dropped?

Thanks for the comments

Regards

Hi aode06,

I thought the boxes were sealed for life, how can the fluid level be checked?

Matthew,

With the engine supported from above, the transmission can be unbolted and lowered from the car:

The SNG deal sounds as if they are supplying rebuilt unit when they want yours back. That's going to be as costly as getting the replacement out there in the first place.

Sealed till death more like, there is a fill hole on the side and a procedure for changing/checking the oil.

Matthew,

Follow the link in post #10 and then keep on scrolling down:

Transmission Fault-transmission_xk.jpg

Links to info on your ZF5HP24 lead to several threads on fluid changing.

That clunk is probably the dreaded A drum breaking up as mine did. $3200 dollars later I can drive my 97 XK to the parts store to continue it maintenance needs.

Hi,

The transmission fault appears to have sorted itself out. My mechanic in France did about 25km earlier this week without the fault light showing. I have had to come back to London to arrange removal from our flat here so have not had a chance to try it myself. I would like to drain the transmission and refill with fluid but we only seem to be able to find a drain and not a filler. Any suggestions. Graham, I haven't had time to trawl the forum as you suggested, busy getting French house ready for London furniture, not easy when you have to get rid of so much.

many thanks to all who showed an interest.

Regards

The filler is on the left side viewed from the front. It is on the side of the gearbox, an 8mm allen key if memory serves, very close to the exhaust pipe. It will be quite tight. You will need to drain the pan and remove all the bolts which again will be tight, some may snap. The filter is inside the pan. When I got mine done I replaced 6lt of genuine jag oil, its expensive. An Indy did mine cost just over £220. Watch the Rev's video, it great and shows you everything you need to know.
Glad you did not need an new box, its easy for you now.
Regards,

ArtyH

Default Gearbox fault REVS Video????

I am today experiencing the same indications.
Please advise where I should go to view the Revs video.
I'm hoping that I can get out of this with just semi-routine maintenance. sam
