Default transmission swap

I have a 1997 xk8 with a slipping transmission. Lot of transmissions for 1998, but 1997 trannys are few and far between. Will 1998 transmission fit in 1997?

Yes they are the same transmission for the XK8. The XKR is different.

I'm glad you brought this up storkjo...Don't mean to steal your thread, but I am facing the exact same dilemma.....I have found that all of the salvage yards / transmission repair shops ask for a VIN when matching transmissions...

1)Anyone know the reason why the '97 isn't mentioned in the auction site ads or junkyard info?

2) Also, will a '98 XJ8 (or '97 XJ8) transmission fit in place of a '97 XK8?

Also (I'm long winded) it seems the '97 engine is the AJ26 and the '98-'99 is the AJ27. The flex plates on these are different, at least as far as the holes in the flex plate go. Also, the rotary switch is or might be different. The question is, how do these differences matter? Can you put the AJ26 rotary switch in the transmission for the AJ27? Do the differences in flex plate create a problem?

Thank you.

The transmissions are the same no change there. The problem comes in with the electronics. E.G. AJ26 versus AJ27 and also the transmission adaptions for the XJ8 versus XK8. It is best to stay with the XK8 I think than to fight the DTC's of XJ versus XK.
The transmission itself isn't that difficult to rebuild and you will find many threads on rebuilding them in the forum.

I think the torque converter may be internally different, also. So best to use the original. But like Vern says, the best choice is probably to rebuild.

With the 5HP24 the TCM is external, so wouldn't the electronics (and therefore any settings, etc.) stay with the car?
There is a subtle difference in the flex plate holes AJ26/27 as the engine timing arrangements are 'enhanced' for CVVT, but wouldn't the plate stay with the motor?

However, you already know what's wrong with your trans: one from a breaker must be a gamble.

I'm willing to take a chance on a transmission out of a wreck for my 1997 XK8 because I am trying to keep the value of the transmission replacement below the value of the car. Yes, that may not be possible, but it's more about foolish pride in getting the car running on the cheap (with a lot of sweat equity) than it is about dollars and cents.

Anyway, I wonder if a transmission from a 2005 XK8 will function in a 1997. Is it still a zf 5hp24 ? (Edit: It seems the 2005 had a six speed.)

If not a 2005, will a 1998 zf 5hp24 from an XK8 work ? Has anyone had actual experience in swapping a later model XK8 transmission into a 1997 XK8?

...I still can't find a replacement from a 1997 and even so, a 1997 transmission will be long in the tooth.

...Not ready to attempt a rebuild....yet.

The 4.2 engine cars (2003 to 2006) have the six-speed ZF 6HP26 transmission. My guess is that attempting to adapt a six-speed ZF into a five-speed ZF vehicle will play major havoc with multiple electronic modules. Unless you are willing to cough up significantly more money than you apparently intend to, I would not recommend attempting it....

Yes, horribly costly - would need custom software.

I have 97 xk8 transmission. It is from a 97 that had front end damaged in an accident. The transmission was rebuilt a couple of years before the accident.
I dont know if it would be worthwhile to have it shipped from CA to you.
If you wish shoot me a PM and we can see if it is worthwhile.
