Default Transmission won't change up from a standng start

Hi all,

Got a little trouble with the XKR. I was sitting in a 2hr traffic jam this morning, and when it cleared and I was able to get going the transmission refuses to change up from a standing start - just goes all the way to the red line in 2nd on a gentle throttle. Which, in a built up area with Adamesh open pipes is a bit embarrassing. Does it in normal and sport mode.

I can get it to change up if I take my foot off the gas for a second, and then all is well with up and down shifts while I am traveling along, but as soon as I stop for traffic lights it does the same thing again - holds on to second..

Manual mode works fine, selects all the gears instantly and smoothly. There are no clunks or jerks either in auto or manual.

There are no warning messages on the dash, and my code reader shows clear (but I think it would only show engine 'P' codes anyway.)

I know I'll have to take it in, but any thoughts on what it could be, and if its a quick fix would be appreciated. Wouldn't want the garage to start dropping out the transmission if its something more accessible.

Thanks.

Neil

RESOLVED

Have been driving around selecting gears manually for a few days, then yesterday I got "cruise not available" message on the dash, and noticed that my brake lights were permanently on. Had a look on the forum and it pointed to the brake pedal switch - took it to my Jag garage - they changed the switch, the brake lights work and so does the transmission! Happy with that!

Many have had the bad brake light switch and posted here, but no posts that I recall seeing mentioned any transmission symptoms associated with it. There are others on this forum more knowledgable and experienced with these cars than am, but I can't see the connection. I am wondering if it is coincidental. For your sake I hope not.

Me too, but I've been driving around all day on motorways and local roads, and the gearbox has behaved faultlessly. Pulls away, and goes up through the box normally again. I'd almost got used to using the shift, but I'm glad I've got auto back

Fingers crossed that's it fixed - but I also don't see why.

Well... cruise is auto-cancelled when you brake so suppose brakes apparently always on (as the switch may have claimed) then no cruise and other upset?

Good fix, either way!

Sure hope the new brake pedal switch fixed the transmission issue for you. Please keep us posted....

We had to replace this switch in my wife's XK8 a year ago. The dash messages said "cruise not available" and "check rear lights". But her ZF transmission never exhibited any of the symptoms you described....
