The '97 through '02 used the 5hp24 transmission. The 'A' drum/valve body issue was known as early as '98. There have been lots of discussions on the subject but I have come to believe that sometime before '00 ZF had upgraded both the 'A' drum and valve body. At least they had by that time published acknowledgement of the problems.
I'll go see if I can find that technical document for a publish date.

Tom is headed in the right direction, but it may not be easy to come up with a date. I thought I read something indicating a 01 to 02 fix for the main pressure valve.
One of the problems will be trying to nail down transmission serial numbers with chassis build dates, even worse than engine numbers with nikasil and tensioners.

Trans Pressure
Thanks BobRoy. I was helping user "Larney" redo the A drum and front pump in his garage over the last few weeks. I know everything will be fine once we put it back in and run it but was just curious for diagnostics reasons and just to double check everything once we get it back together. I thought there was some plug around the shifter linkage on the drivers side but its not really clear from any of the diagrams...

I think that one from the pump housing is the volume control valve, yes I wouldn't want to mess with that one. I was thinking of number 8 in the attached picture. PH = line pressure, I think it has a removable plug there and I was wondering if that was the the line pressure test port.

Perhaps this will help. When I replaced the A-drum prior to failure as an insurance of sorts my tech told me that he was sure that my drum was of the type that can fail. It obviously differed from the replacement. He was also certain that my valve body was not affected by the earlier problems with over pressure. This is a 2001 car with the original transmission.
It is probably necessary to somehow get build dates for individual transmissions to learn their manufacturing dates. We have no idea how long the runs were and if a multi-year stock was produced. This would make sense from a manufacturing point of view with tooling considerations, etc. Stock was probably renewed every three years with additional replacement units allocated for warranty and replacement work. This means that a new car could have a transmission built three years earlier if not more.

We did replace the A drum with the newer beefed up type with lock in snap ring and did the new style kit on the valve body spring-piston pressure relieve valve. IF there is a service port on the trans I would like to visually check the internal pressure with a gauge just to see and verify how things are going on inside. Anyway, just wanted to see if anyone has done this before - check internal fluid pressure.
