Can anybody tell me if a 2001 XJ8 tranny will fit a 97 XK8? I could not find any referance to a change in 99 that interchange has listed.

Thanks

Default On a slighty different note

I just bought a 2001 XJ8, its got a few Minor issues im allready adressing, new coolant level sensor and a new Thermostat T housing and the valve cover gaskets...to be expected

My main Worry is the Transmission, the car has 100 on the clock, its in Amazing condition inside and out and i love it.

Ive been doing some reading around about servicing the Trans and the infomation is various from page to page, the first thing id liek to know, is my Tranny the 5 speed Ford, like on the LS 3.9 or is it the 6 speed?. which model exactly.

The second thing is, i am getting the whine when its cold starting cycling through the gears..even when warm driving at really low speeds from stoping to starts up gears and down its very bumpy on the gears (car shakes a little kind of).

When i boot it(give it some peddle) i get a 2 second whine from some place my thoughts are a bearing in the gear box.

Anyways, reading around, i think its safe place to bet at 100k the tranny is close to fault. Id like to change the fluids but the information thats availbale is very off putting to say the least.

About the best i could do, as it sounds, is to put a can of this New "seafoam Tranny conditioner" in the fill hole on the Transmission.

Or maybe, drop the the pan and change the filter(if its the ford model).

and leave the tourqe converter alone and top up with Mercon V (i belive this is the correct stuff, but again heard so much conflicting infomation).

Could anybody please be exact to the point and tell me:

What is the tranny i have, second is a service from the garage floor workable and can i change the filter out or do i have to buy one of those "pan style deals.

Second, which is a safe acceptable Trans fluid to put in with the exsisting stuff that will be left in the tourqe converter?.

And 3rd, if i take this beautiful car some place to get it done by a shop for a "pump around job" isnt there a special way it has to be pumped to avoid internal damage?

My head is spinning with all kinds of information on this issue, enough, and for my 4th question, that.."How far are my trousers going to be pulled down if i bite the bullit and go to jaguar for the job".

All the way and with no grease? or what.

thanks, UK Mike and great to join the club.

You have a so called "sealed for life" ZF 5 speed transmission. Life span can range from 60-120 K miles on early cars.
There is no top up facility, and the correct Esso fluid must be used.
You may well save the transmission with a fluid and filter change, by someone who knows the correct procedure, not an easy DIY as you need to get access while keeeping the car horizontal, and within a specified temp. range.
Sure someone on here could recommend a local specialist to advise you on the best way to go.

I've recently PX'd my 2001 XK8 for a 2005 XK8. The 2001 Model Year had a 5-speed box, the 2005 has a 6-speed box. Change was around 2003 depending on market location.

I'm not a tranny expert, but you might have a bad A clutch drum and along with it a radial needle bearing failure in its hub support bearing. This is a common failure of the ZF 5 speed. The only way to know is to get it to an expert. Checking the fluid level is the only thing you can do without testing.
