Default Unique Head Bolt Pattern?

Hello All,

I'm in the middle of a head gasket R/R and ordered a new set of head bolts that appear to have a unique head/cap design that requires a special tool?

Looks like it takes some sort of a spline socket. I purchased a 7-piece metric set to fit my 3/8-inch-drive socket wrench at Harbor Freight last year. My set starts at 10mm and goes up to 19mm. Probably paid less than $10 for the set using a coupon....

Take your photo with you to the store so you can match it up to the proper tool. Better yet, bring those parts along with you....

Looks like a VW/Audi Polydrive to me. Did not know Jaguar used those...

You need to look at the specifics. These bolts could be recessed pretty low into the head and these short bulky bits won't reach. Check eBay for pictures of the VW/Audi Polydrive that show the long stem. FWIW, my understanding is that VW calls this 10mm tool "Polydrive", but it is part of a larger set called RIBE...

This is a nice bit, very stable, very confidence inspiring. Last thing you need is a stripped head bolt.

Yes VW started using those for the 1.8 turbo engines in New Beetles, Jettas and Passats.

Jaguar issued the RIBE bits to the Jaguar Dealers as SPECIAL TOOLS in 2003.

Cam sprocket and head bolts use this tool.

So, (confusingly?), this document refers to a 12mm short RIBE bit. Can it be used for the head bolts, or are head bolts supposed to be the smaller 10mm "Polydrive"? Most "polydrive" bits for VW/Audi on eBay refer to it as M10 (Metric 10mm?).
