Default Upgraded transmission pressure regulator results?

Can anyone report on the longer term effect of installing, in my case, the CT powertrain products part 5HP-24-PR transmission kit?

Local shops won't touch my transmission until after it grenades, and I wanted to see if this kit is worth installing.

My symptoms are the occasional clunk starting from a near stop, and slow to switch between forward and reverse when hot.

2000 NA Coupe, 101K miles. The transmission had a $4K service by the previous owner, 20-30K miles ago.

what kind of service costs $4K? would not install a kit unless and until you can discover what is your current problem. suggest that you find one of the actual ZF centers near you and have them diagnose the problem. if it is fixable, i strongly suggest installing the upgraded A-drum as part of any work involving removal of the transmission.

He said it was rebuilt because "it was slipping". But what I suspect happened is it will slip if the fluid is low (foams?), and they "fixed" his transmission by refilling it.

What is a "ZF center" and how do I find one?

So far, the only work I can get anyone to quote me on is a $5200 rebuilt swap. If I can extend the life of the current one, I think it makes sense but I can't find anyone that is interested. One shop said to wait until it blows up, then use a cell phone and a tow truck. Do not like.

Call ZF tech support in Chicago and discuss your situation with them. The number is (800) 451-2595. Ask for Steve Jaffe or Joe Laubinger. Both of them have given me great advice over the years on our 6HP26 transmissions. They may be able to refer you to a local ZF shop....

obtain the contact information for the shop that did the service; there are too many unknowns. ZF has authorized service centers. a simple google search helps here. ask an independent Jaguar mechanic about which transmission shops he uses.

Thanks for the info. I called ZF Chicago and talked to Joe. He was very informative, and that info was helpful when I was talking to a shop.

Joe told me slow shifting or clunk on start from stopped could be pressure regulator or solenoids. But when I said it was worse when it was hot, it was likely a leak.

Now I'm trying to figure out if the shop I have an appointment at is going to try to soak me.

my little rule of thumb: if you have any concern that a shop will take advantage of you, do not go there. in a big car culture state there should be many trusted and competent shops. try something like Yelp or ask a trusted Jaguar specialist shop for a referral.

What's been happening around here is shops with a good reputation being sold and then run into the ground, living on the reputation. Or going out of business. Or refusing to do work that's too small or might be tricky. My nearest Jaguar shop won't return calls.

I had a rebuild done on my truck transmission last year (radiator leaked into the cooler) and I think I was their only customer, lot was empty. Everybody is driving Teslas and leased Mercedes' these days.

yep, the leasing craze in the coastal markets really changed things for the established businesses. happened where i live. still, if you look around including searching the regional sections here, there are places to go. ZF has authorized service centers. check their website for a list.

I'm sure there are members in the bay area who can recommend a shop. Try posting in the regional and XJ8 (x308) forums.

wow, the cost of living is much higher there. well you could probably rent a truck with a flatbed car trailer for much less. i've done this and it went well. there is always a creative solution.

I once reserved a U-haul car trailer a couple weeks in advance. I go to pick it up and they say they don't have one. "One didn't come in" they shrugged. Never tried again.

I think when the A-drum goes, the car will still reverse. So I could load it that way, if I could get a trailer. Already have a truck.

Default Back to original thread topic - CT Powertrain ZF5HP24 upgrades

hi, on another thread i’ve been considering a renewal/overhaul of my tranny over summer 2019. Looking at the website, i’m not sure installing the CT Powertrain kit is worth all the effort of removing the tranny out of the car.
My thoughts relate to getting the valve body serviced, but i’m Struggling too to find someone willing to take it on. My only choice today in Bahrain is to change sump filter and fitting the transco upgraded pressure valve. When I ask if they can do an A Drum install or D/G clutch work, garages doesn’t want to know
