USA road trip July 2025
Last year in November I asked a good friend if he wanted to go on a big road trip. He said yes. He has a 1972 Ford Torino and I have a 2003 XK8 convertible.
Eventually we left BC, Canada in July 2025. First stop was Las Vegas. Went to cirque du Solei, the Shelby museum and Fremont street.Next to the USS Midway, Aircraft Carrier in San Diego.
Fom there to Hurst Castle in San San Simeon.
Up to San Francisco and a tour round Alcatraz.
From there we drove all the way up the California/Oregon coast. When we got home we had done 3300 miles. Even though we didn’t take it easy on speed. (Didn’t stick to speed limits)
I still achieved a mileage of just under 30 mpg
Over the entire journey of 11 days the black shroud on the drivers seat belt clip broke on my Jag, and My buddy had a loose wire on a solenoid from the battery. (Quick fix)
Overall a very successful road trip.
USS Midway

The best days were walking up and down the strip in Vegas and seeing all there was. Also doing the tour of the USS Midway and alkatraz. These are the reasons for the trip. Also to take the XK8 out to test it long trip comfort and capability. Eventually with the roof down and the outside temperature at 36 Celsius, the air conditioning did a great job of keeping me cool.
Also drove about 30 miles in my buddy’s car to alkatraz. Very big, but it is a 70’s muscle car. Took it down Lombard street and had to take wide turns. He had lots of comments on his car, but it is USA. If we had been in UK, I would have lots of comments.
We did a round trip of 3300 miles. Now my car has 66000 miles on.
Food was expensive, especially considering the Canadian exchange rate.
The best days have to be the entire trip, that is what we both planned.
Hotels were good. Driving was great and all the outings were great. What more should we need. Also no problems with the cars.

Great positive story!
Several images show just how big USA cars can be.
Talked to a 2 door cadillac owner @ car show...it was over 18' long. As a former body man I was amazed with how straight the rear fenders were.
