use the key to unlock the trunk and valet mode will clear - on the 2000XK8, the manual lock Is between the X and K of the XK8 on the trunk

This may not help but can't hurt. Do a hard reset by disconnecting the neg. batt. cable and touching it to the positive for a few seconds. The idle will be high on start up but will calm down.

It may be a problem with the security module, but I'm already out of my depth by mentioning it.

The boot lights MUST illuminate for the VALET to be CANCELLED. (BOOT OPEN INDICATED ON THE INSTPK)

Sounds like the boot lid latch switch failed.

I had to pull the trim loose on a customer car to 'JUMP' the latch switch to turn the lights on to disable the VALET mode and order a new switch.

There's no need to involve the dealer for the fob, buy one from ebay and programme it yourself.

My 2000 XK8 did exactly the same thing the first day I was leaving for work after buying it, not only that but exactly the same problem with the release. No reset opening the trunk with key or fob. Turned out I bumped the cheap valet switch with my knee getting in and the switch was stuck in. I cleaned around it with the end of an unbent paper clip then sprayed WD40 in sparingly around the edges. After pushing it a few times it began to operate smoothly and didn't stick in. No issues for 3 months now.

A perfect example of why we ask members to add vehicle details to their Signature.

The early XK8's didn't have a release button in the centre of the lid trim although several owners have retrofitted one.

You should add whether you have an OE fitted release button and also if it has ever worked since you purchased the vehicle.

A hard reset should solve the problem then disconnect the valet switch, waste of time and a PITA.....
