Been a lurker here but first issue I couldn't find through search.
I have an 06, previous owner replaced the center guages with a set from an 01 to fix the clock. Voltmeter doesn't work. I've seen that there may have been a change in 02.
Are they all compatible or do I need to find a newer set? Any suggestions on troubleshooting?
Was this originally a navigation vehicle converted to 3 gauges? Is there a navigation DVD unit in the trunk? Post a photo of the connector going to the 3-gauge cluster. Is the oil pressure gauge activating?
I was able to get in the garage tonight, guages were made in 02 for an 03 car. I don't know if I've seen the vin put in so many different places as Jaguar did on these.
I believe it's always been a 3 guage car. Oil pressure works, and during startup, warning light works on the guage.
Anyone have a pinout for the harness I can check for reference voltage or is this a digital signal?
The gauges in the Minor Instrument Pack are digital, they get up/down pulses from the Major Instrument Pack. You can find the wire colours in the wiring diagram from Gus's site:-
You could potentially (pun intended) use a multimeter (or better still an oscilloscope) to check for near to 5v at the up/down pulse connections on the connector in the first photo on the voltage gauge pins, or do a continuity check on the wiring from each end of those connectors between the main cluster and the minor cluster. You should also visually check the socket on the major instrument pack for missing pins - navigation cars did not have the necessary pins to connect to the 3 gauges.
If the wiring is all good you probably have a faulty gauge. I think the only difference between the early and later gauges is the colour of the needles. The easiest fix is glue - put the needles where you want them and rely on the warning lights - job done.
From an earlier entry, get a set of "REALGAUGES" from Jag Wrangler. Then you will have useful information. The OEM gauges from Jag are really only glorified, "Idiot Lights".
I agree that you have the factory gauges. As dibbit suggested you can download the electrical diagrams from the link he provided. The voltmeter operates on 4 wires only. They are all pulsed signals (actual 12v pulses, not 5v pulses). Unless you have an oscilloscope, it would be easiest to troubleshoot by checking continuity on all 4 wires. If the continuity is there, the either the major cluster or minor 3 gauge instrument cluster has an issue. Definitely start with a used replacement for the minor cluster since they all interchangeable. If it is the major cluster that is bad, it may not be worth the potential trouble to repair.
Final question to the brain trust on this. I know the stock guages are essentially idiot lights but I would like to upgrade to real guage at some point.
A lot of ebay listings have guages 96-02. Did they really change or they all compatible?
They are all compatible. The 2003 and later models have a chrome center for the needle that matches the other gauges, but these are often hard to locate used. Unless you are competing in a concours. the black centers on the earlier gauges look just fine to most people.
If you purchase RealGauge, I can likely test and repair your original 3-gauge cluster if necessary. PM me if interested.
