Smile Water pump

I have 41,000 miles on my 2000 XK8 and I was wondering how long the original water pump can be expected to last. And what are the signs that the water pump needs to be upgraded to the better plastic impeller version.

Thanks guys.

If you haven't changed the water pump. you really should address it now. Also, the plastic thermostat housing (and thermostat) need changed at the same time.

It's not a matter of if, but a matter of when. It's not worth the peace of mind for $150 in parts.

No need to change the waterpump, from 1998 these are fine, it was only the very early ones that gave issues. Better spend the money on a good code reader imho.

The plastic thermostat housing might indeed be a good idea to change.

Thanks AVOS. That is good information. The thermostat housing appears fine for now. Recently changed coolant and there appeared to be no problem with that. However I will keep check on it and order a metal one and change it in the near future. But has there been a history with the thermostat itself sticking?

Just checking, I'm guessing you've changed your tensioners. If not that's what I would be concerned about. Good Luck

The thermostat sticking issue is well known and common, and as that one is very cheap to change, I wouldn't hesitate to do it.

You can take it out and test it on the stove with a thermometer, but at that point what the heck, just replace it. EZ job on a Sunday afternoon. Best part is taking a fast spin to test out the new one.

Yes RCSign. I changed my upper ones and put, I think some pretty good pictures on the forum. Any one changing them DIY I think they would help along with a couple of tips. Actually they had just stated to crack.
