Red face a wee bit of help please!

Ok, day 3 of owning our 1998 XK8, and got a couple of issues I could use some help with, first of all the cruise control is not working, the light on the switch comes on but it will not set, there are no warning messages... second when you select a gear other than D i get a check eng light and a gearbox fault message, the check engine light goes out and the message goes away when you switch the car off and restart it... any help would be great... aside from that the car is superb, looking forward to many topless drives in southern New Mexico!!

thanks

Welcome to the forum! The first thing that popped into my head was that one of the two brake pedal switches was bad, but that usually gives you an error on the dash. I supposed it could also be the actual button on the steering wheel. Or it may be a fuse, however since the light comes on I don't think that's too likely.

By the way, my brother-in-law works at the missile range. My wife and I visited White Sands last summer in the XK8.

Thank you Rev Sam!, I will have a good look at it at work today as the previous owner has done some audio moods that has wires in that area, glad you like the sands, it is a really neat place, will post some pics once the jag at white sands has had it cosmetic issues fixed.

My wife and I go to the beach a lot here in North Carolina. The sand sticks to everything. I was telling her how cool white sands is because is so dry and the sand just falls off of you, you don't even have to brush it off. Unfortunately it rained a lot at white sands last summer. There was actually puddles everywhere! I'd never seen it like that before. Of course, sand stuck to everything and my wife thinks I was just making it up.

By the way, I grew up over on the other side of the mountains in Roswell. We drove the Jag all over that area last summer. My wife especially liked Ruidoso and Cloudcroft. For some pics we took of the area just search for the "hittin the road" thread that I started.

I love the scenery out west. I'd much rather take a road trip out west than take a cruise to to the Caribbean, or a trip to Hawaii. Unfortunately my family feels differently. I'm going on a cruise this summer

You might recognize this place. My wife and I ate there last summer.

Don't mean to highjack but where are the two brake switches. I could only find one.

To be honest, I'm having trouble finding the switches in the picture as well.

If you lay on your back and look up behind the brake pedal you'll see a bracket. That bracket holds two microswitches. There's another thread on removing the bracket, I think SgtofMarines started the thread. It's a pain in the a$$

replacing brake switch is easy as pie if you just replace the switch and not the bracket. (just the plastic part, not the metal)

I'm 6'4". NOTHING behind the brake pedal is "easy as pie". I actually removed the driver's seat when I removed the bracket, and it was still awkward. If I ever have to do it again, however, I'll try your way.

By the way, I made a video of the brake switch replacement, but it was nothing but hours and hours of expletives. I never uploaded it.

Ditto on the height thing Rev. I was able to get it to hang on the pedal pin enough for one stud to stick through, grab that stud from under the hood with needle-nose pliers and start a nut on the second stud.

Default Bamboo

I had someone stick a bamboo skewer through the hole from the top side and used it as a guide from below. Went in first time.
