Default What type of Engine Coolant - XK8

2001 XK8. I do not have the owner's manual and I did a search on this board but too many replies came back.
Guy at Autozone looked it up and his computer said to use regular 50/50.
I had a 2000 S-Type and it used a different type, hence my seconf =d guessing the computer at Autozone.
Thanks

Recommended coolant on my 2002 XKR is the extended life orange colored anti-freeze, no mention of mix.

GM Dex Cool (orange stuff) in 50/50 mix. Been using it in my 2001 since I've had it.

What he said. ^

My 2001 XK8 spec is for Dexcool. You can buy it pre-mixed or add distilled water to the concentrate.

It's the coolant Specification that's important, not the Brand. Whatever brand you buy, its needs to conform to specification W55 M97 B44D for Extended Life Coolant. This information will be on the label. Such coolant is normally coloured orange but there are exceptions. The concentration required is 50/50.

You can download the full set of manuals for your vehicle as PDF's from here:

The information on the question you have asked here is to be found in the Vehicle Care Handbook.

I read all the posts on this topic about a year ago. Learned two things:
1) it definitely should be the same color as what's in there now, which is hopefully orange. Mixing colors is bad.
2) I chickened out and bought the magic Jaguar fluid from the dealer at some ridiculous price like $80 a gallon or something like that. Spending the $80 helps me sleep better because I don't need to worry if it's the right fluid or not.

Hope this helps,

Marc

Default An Ode to the Never Ending Question of "Which Antifreeze?"

In my opinion, there are really only two types of antifreeze: The kind bought by obsessive compulsive owners, and the kind used by everyone else.

I have used the generic Autozone universal type in all my cars w/o a problem for many many years. As far as I know, if it says universal mix on the label, the color has no bearing on chemical composition. Sic, green is the same as the yellow.

There are two (2) caveats to to my proposition: First is that when I began to use the generic, it was after flushing the old coolant out of the system as best I could. Second, that I flush and fill coolant at least every two (2) years.

In reality, the coolant is usually partially replaced with new about once a year because I am either performing work on the cooling system; or as preventive maintenance care. I never reuse any coolant. Always add fresh. And always add only distilled water... never from the tap.

All of the problems associated with Dexcool are associated with neglecting to replace coolant and are a result of leaving the coolant in five or ten years wherein it turns to what you and I would refer to as slush.

Some European owners need to be careful with the phosphate content off their antifreeze reacting with aluminum; but that type of coolant is not available in the US and is a non issue here.

Graham, I think the correct formulation spec is WSS-M97B44-D (WSS, not W55). Otherwise, you are correct. You can find this coolant at any Ford dealership.

Your absolutely right.

My only excuse is - have you seen the size of the print on the back of the Jaguar Coolant container?

WSS-M97B44-D is available as 'Zerex Dexcool Life 5/150', 'Prestone DEX-COOL Extended Life Antifreeze/Coolant' and 'Motorcraft Orange'.

Things to be considered are not just the gelling that can occur if two dissimilar products are combined. Think about water pump seals, heater and radiator core size and spacing, heater pump seals and motor loading, head gasket materials and composition, pH reactions between various materials employed, yadda, yadda, yadda. Much easier to just use what the vehicle was designed to use.

Ha! Yes. I had to read the label twice to find the designation amidst all the scribble.

Thanks for the replies. I stopped at night to purchase the coolant, but had I waited until morning, I would have seen the specs on the expansion tank. I ended up using the recommended WSS-M97B44-D 50/50 coolant. Why take a chance, right?
Anyway, the light has gone out and everything seems to be fine. Again, thanks for the replies - this is why I love this forum!

Now I will do a search for the annoying shake in the front end when I get to 70 mph. I think I saw a thread on that right above this one.
