Default What is Your Engine Ingesting?

When I put the twin screw on, I added a catch can to the part load breather. I hadn't ever used one before, but as much crud was in the intake, I thought it couldn't hurt.

This isn't the first time I've drained it but I did again today along with some other cleaning and maintenance so I thought I would share that they really do work.

That's about 3000 miles worth. YUCK!

That's a lot of oil, how's your oil level looking? Is this normal?

Oil level is fine per the dipstick, consumption hasn't increased appreciably since installing the twin screw or the water/meth injection despite pushing 20-21psi of boost.

That is a 1qt ziplok bag so is maybe a half pint or there abouts.

When I took the intercooler off, the oil almost ran out of it, so I'd say that it's pretty well normal.

Are you sure it was PART load breather? It is located on the left engine bank - marked with red dot in attached file.

Did you add OCC to the full load breather as well?

It is the part load breather but on a 4.2 the connection is on the right hand side. I left the stock check valve place.

Didn't bother adding a catch can to the full load breather, space is limited and there was nothing at all in the tube when it took it apart.

That's a lot of oil.

You might want to confirm that your oil separators are in place under both valve covers. A while back, I discovered that my right-hand valve cover was missing its oil separator, resulting in oil finding its way into the airbox.

Both valve covers are supposed to have these oil separators in place...perhaps yours is missing somehow, like mine was. Not an emergency, but worth a check.

What does the oil separator look like from the outside?

I removed the check valve and took a peek down the hole and it looks as though there is a sort of metal shroud under it.

Took me a bit to figure the drawing out... #3 looks like it is pointing at the spark plug opening but I found TheCoupe's old thread and now I get it. Seems as though the oil separator is in place on my car.

I probably have overstated the amount of oil but I'll keep an eye on it. As I said earlier when the intake was off it was full of oil, and I had never noticed anything unusual about the car, its performance or oil consumption before that.

There has been no marked increase in oil consumption recently. There is a little bit that disappears, maybe 1/4 to 1/3 of a quart every 5k miles, but there was never been any smoke before the catch can was installed.

What is the expert consensus about the "normal" range of oil consumption between changes?

I know when I recently had mu intake off there was a good amount of oil in there. I would not say puddles of it as much as just very WET if you will. We have not driven the car a ton but never have seen the oil level drop. I know when I pulled off my TB elbow that baby was really covered with a lot of carbon/cooked oil.

My experience was similar. Now the intake is bone dry and all that junk is getting caught in the can.

I can imagine an ounce or two per thousand miles being digested without any smoke or causing much notice.

It looks like a lot, but never having known how much was being pulled through the intake and burned, it is hard to say what is normal.
