Default Wheel Fitting & Removal Alignment Tool

Does anyone know where I can purchase a tool like this for my XK8. I have 20" Detroit wheels that are very heavy to fit and having something like this will make it easier to put the wheels back onto the car. I am told that the wheel nuts on the hub are M12 size. The company in the UK that provides these for Range Rovers/Land Rovers only make M14 tools.

If like me you struggle to get the wheel up to the right height to engage the lugs I use a broad tyre lever under the bottom the wheel. I find it offers just enough leverage to lift it to the right height and enough wobble to get the alignment. But I may well have misunderstood the problem!

I believe the thread size is 12mm X 1.5. Here's a link to some hanger pins that might work for you. They're out of stock with this company, but if you copy and Google the part number there are ebay vendors that also carry them. There also kits available that carry assorted sizes of these tools.

Good luck!

  • Doug, I have had results using copper plumbing pipe similar to the threaded tool that you posted.
  • Mike, I have had results using Rebar similar to the wheel lift bar that you posted.
Regardless, I opt to just get on my knees and roll the wheel on to my lap so to speak. I adjust its height by rolling the wheel either toward my knees or toward my waist. This is just my technique as I am 73 and probably only average strength . This is how I handle my 20" Dodge Ram wheels which I would guess are just as heavy.

the X100 is not metric, it’s 1/2-20

We always used a shovel to lift and align the wheel on trucks and equiptment. Works equally well on heavy car tires. Simply put tire up against hub, put shovel under outer edge of tire and lever down to lift and align.

Sounds good if working room is available.

Hi Max224, they appear to be just what I am looking for, BUT it appears they only sell to the USA and I’m in the U.K.! Just my luck that I can’t find these tools in the U.K.!

For the rest of the comments, thanks for your suggestions. I am now considering a wheel removal/lifter trolley. Although these are around £500-£600 in the U.K., it may help me from getting a hernia!!

If you want a wheel trolley/lifter then ask around and see if anyone will make you one. I was a rubbish welder but I made a simple wheel dolly that doubled as a lifter. Cost in parts was under £20. Time for me was more than a pro would take. Could you bodge a sack trolley with a slightly longer platform?

Would this do?

I believe the Jaguar Project 8 with carbon brakes has two wheel fitting pins in the tool kit to avoid damage to the brake discs. I have been unable to establish the part number or thread size of these tools but it’s possible they could be purchased from Jaguar if they fit. Can anybody provide further information on these Jaguar supplied wheel fitting pins?
