I recall one member wrote of doing it without locking the flywheel and the cams several years ago, but I wouldn't want to try it.

 

A word of caution--without the tools it is a real gamble. With the cheap tools offered in many places the cam holders are ALU. and will not prevent the cams moving which is almost like not using the tools. There is a reason there are so many vendors offering the tool kit--it is needed.

Why would one want to go through so much work to risk not having the cam timing set correctly?

Use the Workshop Manual and follow the correct procedure using the correct tools.

 

If everyone did it correctly, we would not have anything to type about. No arguing and admonishing??
