Unhappy Will not disengage from "Park"

On my home today my hand accidently pushed the shift lever from Drive to Park and back to Drive while the car was going about 20mph. Nothing seemed to happen at the time but when I went to pull the car out of the driveway, the shift lever stays stuck in Park. Also my tilt/telescoping wheel doesn't seem to work.

Any ideas? Is there some sort of reset like disconnecting the battery and reconnecting it? Can it be as simple as a fuse or did I screw the pooch on this one. I just purchased my 1997 XK8 last week!

You probably blew a fuse. The Park interlock can be bypassed by removing the small cover at the top left of the console and inserting the key to release the park.

Don't have time to look up the fuse.

Might try a hard reboot if nothing else works.

Talking Huh?

How does one accidently push the shift lever 4 inches in both directions? Out four wheeling and hanging on for dear life? This post doesn't sound right...

UK spec vehicle
Pass side engine compartment fuse box
fuse 10 5 amp park/neutral switch.
drivers side engine compartment fuse box
fuse 8 5 amp steering wheel adjustment .

I think as well brake switch fault would cause locking of gear shifter

Had this happen to me once from cold when trying to pull out of my garage - shift wouldn't move out of park and I couldn't hear the normal click when depressing the brake pedal. Did a hard reset and all was fine - never happened since(18 months ago). However, I did have to replace the battery not long after and didn't have any of the normal window reset problems prior to the battery failing. Just a thought and simple to try.

If you're new to the J-gate I guess it could happen if you "shift" on the right side and not the left. I once managed to throw my 6.0 XJ-S into Reverse in the rain one night. I wish wish wish I had a video of it. Did a full 360 on a city street and amazingly hit nothing except a moveable bus stop sign I sideswiped. $1400 for bodywork and $5.95 for some new Jockeys.
