Default Stupid front plate

I saw a post in this thread from a guy that was p****d that in certain states in the US you have to display a front plate.

I totally sympathise, in the UK we have the same issue so that Big Brother cameras can fine you if you are doing 32 mph in a 30 zone..

It is another source of revenue that the UK government can screw us drivers for.

I had an old fashioned number plate sticker on the bonnet (hood) of my XKR and I was pulled over by a young officer. He was very aggressive and told me to remove it immediately. When I told him that it had been passed as legal he threatened to arrest me for a public order offence.. I have paid my taxes for many years... do these retarded idiots not have any proper crimes to deal with?? !! 😖😖

Smitty99XKR,

What did you do to create such a stink? Why did he stop you in the first place? Sounds strange to me! Be glad he didn't shoot you!

Sounds like a 'newbie' trying to make his name. Unfortunately there are a few members of the 'Law Enforcement Est. that try to enforce their idea of the law without knowing the real laws. Best not to argue, just calmly explain your case, then ask for his I.D. and supervisor's name. Make no threats("I'll have your badge!!", etc.). Then contact his supervisor, pref. in person.
This coming from a former fed. agent(me), who knows good and bad cops(I was pulled over once for hauling pot at 2 pm in a red Corvette). 95% of LEOs are good, but then there is a 5% deficit.

He obviously stopped me because he believed my sticker on the bonnet was illegal, perhaps he was over zealous and having a bad day.

I actually did not create "a stink".. I calmly told him that the DVLA had advised me that the sticker would be ok. He then got quite aggressive and said the person was wrong, at which point I said OK and agreed to remove the item as soon as I got home. Fortunately the police in the UK do not carry firearms as standard as they do in the US so there would be no risk of being shot.

I hope this clarifies things

Regards 😀

Thank you Sam, my thoughts exactly.

You do see a lot of classic cars with bonnet number plate stickers and also many people in the UK have private plates with the numbers respaced in order to make names or words.

Isn't it interesting how DVLA with happily sell you plates that you can respace the letters and numbers to make your name or a word at great profit to them but then fine you if you do that???!! 🤣🤣

That was not the issue here, it was a perfectly legal spacing but just on the bonnet that was not correct.

It is all to do with the ANR system on speed cameras and the traffic police use I believe..

It is the luck of the draw if you get pulled for either infringement, but I did unfortunately.

I very much agree with you that argueing with an officer will only make the situation worse 😀👍.

I now have the plate mounted on a plinth below the front bumper, but the problem with that is that it now scrapes on speed bumps!

Bag Humbug!🤣🤣

Presumably this particularly officious officer was just bored. Odd, as we hear regularly in the news that they're under-manned.

Not sure what E-type owners should do.
I hear that Guernsey plates cause the UK police some confusion, too (old-style black/silver is perfectly legal on any vehicle)

Love the bright red. Really works for me on the coupé

Thanks friend..
Yes I think it is just better to say yes sir no sir and bite your lip.
Don't get wound up and think "why me? when all of the boy racers that never seemed to get pulled over!!".
Just the luck of the draw, if you do get a pull its how you deal with it.

Love the Rowley Birkin QC avatar BTW... my hero! 🤣🤣

"I'm afraid I was very... very.. drunk" 🤣🤣

I bet Rowley would have driven a Jeaagg! Perhaps an XK120 as a young man, then an S - Type in his barrister days 🥰🥰

Smity & Michaeth and all you English Guys!
Your English License Plates sound pretty confusing to me...Sounds like you Guys are in the middle of a License Plate change over there? Here in Texas, We have had Regular Plates with Numbers "forever" but several years ago, they started selling Personalized Plates, where you could pick what you wanted them to say. As long as it was nice and didn't offend anyone....I decided on my initials BCP and the color of White Plates with Blue Letters......That's was probably 15 years ago and I still have the same Plates....I put (1) on the Rear and the other in the Trunk/Boot and forgot about it....I've only been "stopped" once where the absence of the Front Plate was even mentioned! That was when I told him that I had ordered a bracket for the Front but it had to come from England and they haven't called me about it yet! The Plate was not the reason why they had "Stopped" me though....I was going a little too fast! Nor did they give me a Ticket for the Plate! I was only going to Dallas @ 125MPH......!

Not to hijack this thread(as we are starting to do), but back in the '70s while driving my '62 Corvette from Texas to Seattle, I was pulled over and had to wait on the side of the road for over 45 minutes while a local gendarme in Idaho ran my license, tag, birthdate, blood type, ad infinitum. When I asked why, he stated that, "It is a known fact that 2 out of 3 Corvettes are stolen and you should be glad that I am checking for you".
Obviously a bored cop with too much time on his hands. This is one of the types that gives the rest a bad name. I try to avoid Idaho when possible.....

ozbot,

Is that Coupe Topaz? Can you send a better Photo of the Wheels and tell us the Brand and something more about the size etc.

My first XK8 was a 1998 Topaz Coupe! This one sure looks pretty!

Thank you sir. Ya she's a Topaz coupe but a '97 and in remarkably good shape for a 25 year old car (completed in Oct '96). When I bought it I wanted a more aggressive look to the car with some 20" rims and since I couldn't find any Jaguar ones I went with some Avarus AV2 rims with some Kuhmo Escta SPT 255 35ZR 20 tires. I also added the Mina exhaust system and the aluminum air intake tube to give it a nicer sound . It's the only one in town and she gets a lot of attention.

ozbot,

Looks like you almost have it under control! Looks good! You need some Jaguar-Head Hub-Caps and you will be Flying High! That's all I see that's needed....The Wheels are different than most but look pretty good...The Chrome Ring looks like a BBS Ring!
