Default XK 8 wont crank

New to the Jag world, I recently acquired a 99 XK8. Had the convertible hydraulic issues, replaced the hoses, had all three cylinders rebuild. Top works great. Then, when I was done with the top, the car wont crank. New battery, did the reset (disconnect battery - tie pos and neg for 10 min). No help.

Jumped starter to the solenoid and starter ran ok.

Swapped relays, still no start.

When key in start position, accessories are off as they should.

The no crank happened the day I finished with the top, was running well.

Was looking at the shop manual/electrical and noted the body process control monitors for the convertible top not moving.

Just going back over what I have worked on, this was the only work I have done.

Anyone now what sensor the control module monitors?

I disconnected the battery when working the top so I thought perhaps I scrambled one of the cars brains. (scrambled mine)..

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Mike

Mike, congratulations on getting the top done. We are in the process, just waiting for a good time for both parties concerned.
Sorry you are having trouble with a restart. Jumping solenoid to starter works, so is power getting to the other side of the solenoid from the battery. If so there is the problem. If not check at the right side front fender for a good contact and then the big battery connections in the trunk behind the spare tire.
Hope we don't have that issue.

Congrats on your DIY with your top!!! I have a '99 and have been through several 'no starts' but none have been as a result of having just performed work. you should probably go through the fundamentals and establish that you're getting fuel, etc. does it turn over?

have someone turn your key on while you are at the rear of your car with the trunk open and listen for your fuel pump cycling on. I recently had to replace mine and it appeared to be the original. I currently have 49k on mine, pump replaced about 500mi ago.

check your fuel rail for pressure at the Schrader valve...rear of engine on passenger side...depress with something and see if fuel sprays out. if not, it's relays/fuses or the pump, which is inside the tank.

good luck, probably something simple...IF it's not the fuel pump...even that's not terribly tough, nor expensive.

Good luck

Mike, one more thought. Put the car in neutral and try, sometimes they get out of adjustment in the Park position.

I have had a similar issue in the past but only when I have locked/unlocked the car with the key and not the remote. I found that taking the key out of the ignition, locking then unlocking the car again with the remote and then starting the car worked for me - worth a try at least.

there is a reset switch inside the fuse panel on the drivers side door believe its a black switch that you push in like a breaker may have tripped it running the hoses behind the fuse box just a thought.... believe it trips if there is a sudden jolt to kill power to various things in the event of an accident.

I would check the left hand fascia fuse box and see if you do not have a blown fuse. Also have you attempted to start it with the shifter in the “N” position?
