XK8 Alternator shot?

XK8 Alternator shot?
1998 Jaguar XK8 with 104k
Symptoms are: Whine coming from the engine accompanied by a burning smell (alt bearing I would guess), voltage runs in the middle (13) with all accessories turned off, but with a load will fall to 11 with AC, Radio and Lights on. Back to 13 when they are shut off.
How difficult would it be to replace the alternator DIY? What's the best cost effective replacement to buy?
Thank you

Hello, it might very well be your alternator, especially if you have not replaced it lately. But just know that there are many other potential problems other than the alternator. If you read the following thread (link provided) you can read my story and the suggestions of others.
It actually tells about what the final diagnosis was.

1. disconnect the battery
2. remove the serpentine belt
3. remove the alternator cooling duct
There's three electrical connections at the rear - harness multi plug, positive terminal and suppression module negative cable.
The alternator is secured with two bolts - a lower pivot bolt and an upper locking bolt.
