Default XK8 battery drains

Hi. I have a 2000 XK8. It runs great, however, I have an issue with the battery draining. If the car sits for less than a week, it needs jumped. Any thoughts on what could be draining the power? I replaced the battery so I know that’s not the problem. Thank you!

As a matter of course, always keep your car on a battery tender of known quality ( CTEK , NOCO Genesis 5 or 10 , or Delran Battery Tender + .

those are recommended even with a good electrical system.

Sorry I can’t help you with the specific issue. Try searching the X100 forum for “ battery drains”. There are quite a few possibilities, and specific ways to track them down.

I believe that the alarm sounder is often a candidate for leakage current. Does the car beep when locked and unlocked? If not, I think that makes the problem more likely to be the sounder. I believe that it is located in the righthand wheel arch but I might be thinking about the X150. Check the forum for "sounder" or similar for previous threads.

Default Solution to battery drainage.

I recently bought this item from my favorite Chinese. I have the convertible and with the roof up it has as much space you need to place the cells. The controller i placed in the booth and the wires trait to the battery.+ van -. Very easy to do and works fine. It is always tricky to let the car stand without the trickle charger longer than a week. Now it is much better with this solar power keeping the battery on charge.

My 2000 XKR doesn't beep when locked or unlocked, I believe this is normal. It beeps only when you lock with a door not completely closed. There are two types of sounder, one, like mine, is a passive sounder and can't drain the battery. The other type is an active sounder which has a battery inside of it, the battery degrades with age and can drain the battery. In this case you can simply unplug the connector behind the sounder and verify if the battery mantains the charge. In every case you must connect a battery mantainer, it's essential with our cars.

The sounder is behind the right headlight, you must remove it to gain access.

I had the same problem and it turned out to be a relay. Your best bet is to get a digital multimeter and conduct a parasitic battery drain test on the car. It is not hard and there are plenty of videos on You Tube to show you how to do it. All cars pull some power when asleep so the first step is to put the multimeter in series with the battery and see just how many milliamps your car is pulling. I think it should be about 35. If you do have a drain then the next step is to test your fuses to locate the drain.

Again plenty of videos on the internet to explain how to do it. Once you find the drain you will know where the problem is.

It seems like a long journey to pull each fuse and then check the meter. But it goes faster than you think and is a definitive testing method.

Depending on how high the current drain is, you can also identify the circuit by measuring the voltage drop across each fuse in turn (without having to take them out). You can find charts online showing the voltage drop versus milliamps for each size fuse, but what you are really looking for is a fuse with a much bigger reading than the others.

The alarm sounder back-up battery was it for mine. Night and day difference in current draw and battery being below voltage. I can now leave the battery off the tender for over a week without any drop. Not that I do this as a rule, however tried it twice to test the difference after removing the alarm battery.

Our ‘99 XK8 beeps once to lock with the fob and twice to unlock.

Mine doesn't. It beeps only when there's something wrong... Maybe it's a programmable feature?

Yes, it looks like there are quite a few configurable options in WDS - you can have the horn and/or the sounder chirping on lock unlock. There are possibly more options depending on the model year as well.

Correct, even with the auxiliary, battery backup sounder, it is possible to set the alarm to silent arm and disarm.
OT, I only wish that there was a factory passive lock with the passive arm option. Will one day make some mods to have it work this way. Would be very convenient for some.

I also get the same beep sequence when using the key to lock / unlock (2002 XKR)

Default Thank you everyone

I need a degree in mechanics to decipher some of these comments. LOL. Seems the fuse test might be my best bet. Thank goodness for YouTube. I appreciate your feedback.
