xk8 side mirrors inop - switch or motor or ?????
Working on my new project - side mirror on drivers side only moves inward. Side mirror on passengers moves outward and upward only. Should I be thinking switch or motor? The joystick is in a module with the window controls - can it be replaced separately or is it all one piece?
I'd suggest downloading a wiring diagram and getting a test meter. You can then test the switch for functionality and look for voltages at the mirror. Otherwise you'll be swapping parts until you find a problem, which is a good way to spend lots of money!
The switch pack can be removed, then 'disassembled' and cleaning of the contacts and board, there are a few threads on this if you do a search. Beware when taking it apart, there are several small parts and placement to keep track of.
I cleaned my switch a few years ago, Jamdmyers correct be very careful taking it apart and remember where the parts go. I used 1500 grit paper on the contacts, and greased them with dielectric grease. I end up doing this three times in a row cleaning the contacts, re-assembling and testing it before it finally started working correctly. But it's been a few years and it works fine. I make a point of using the switch a few times a year to keep it working.
Was going to suggest the same as the other two guys, the switch pack does get dirty contacts so if the moter is working one way it will work the other it just needs the feed from switch, but as others say watch out for the little pieces trying to escape when you open it up, contact cleaner from maplin is ok
good luck

You folks are awesome! Pulled the switch apart a second time - used 600 wet dry on all the contacts, electronic cleaner on the plug, dielectric grease where needed, and presto - no need to buy a $200 switch. Thanks for all the help.....now on to the cruise control!
