Default XK8 wheel bearings

I've searched the forums for help but cant find any for this one. Has anyone changed the inner and outer wheel bearing on the rear? Are there instructions on here someplace and I just dont see them? Starting to make some noise and I have to do them soon.
Thanks

Doug, This kind of job is beyond my expertise, I spent $700 to have one front wheel bearing changed. Good for you if you can do it yourself. I remember that a special tool is needed, memory says it costs $150 new, but I have seen folks post suggestions of places or people that will rent it to you. I just noticed that you limited your question to rear only, I may be driving ahead of my headlights here then. In any case, I'm sure the price will be a good reference for you.

Here's a link to the JTIS Rear Wheel Bearing procedure document on my MediaFire account:

http://www.mediafire.com/view/uwvpeh...l_Bearings.pdf

It's a 5mB PDF.

Graham, Now that looks like a fun afternoon. I wonder if you can put the hub on the press and get the axle carrier out of the hub. That looks like the only special tool that we couldn't work around. Kind of like the old Triumph hub tool no one had and took to the shop and they heated it up and bent the axle, of course unbeknown to the owner.
Still, it looks easier than the BMW rears.
Thanks for PDF, I would have to think about trying to do this on a one day turn around.

My local repairer replaced all 4 wheel bearings on my XJ and, just recently, a front bearing on my XK. They take it apart, trundle over the Jag main dealer and pay about £10 to borrow their 60t press. They then push out the old ones and push the new ones in. Heating is not recommended!

The rears are certainly much more involved than the fronts.

One half way house would be to do the carrier removal and rebuild on to the car and let the indie/jag dealer do the bearing swap, would save a bit of cost.

Jim, how much did you pay to have all four changed, that must have made you wince a bit?

The front wheelbearing (on the XJ and not the XK as I said) cost £225. I actually paid £600 as I also had the front discs and pads replaced.

The other XJ had all 4 wheelbearings done about 3 years ago - it cost £1200 because the rears are so difficult (something to do with the ABS rotors). And yes, I gulped, but she was smooth afterwards. That was done at about 200,000 miles.

Ok, You got me interested. Anyone have a spare complete hub, no axle shaft needed they would like to donate to the cause. I have most things needed, press and a assortment of bearing chasers and can have about anything cut to fit. I would be glad to pay shipping and give this a try. Shims to adjust the run out may be part of the problem.
Of course if there are other places that do it for a reasonable price, lets hear about it, save me a bunch of trouble and gives us another problem solved when the time comes.

That's not going to be easy to find! In the UK I often look at Ebay ads for XJ's which say they are breaking them, and ask for the part by contacting the seller, agree a price, and buy it through Buy It Now. In your case they can torch the hub off (through the arms and driveshaft) and it oesn't matter if the bearing is shot.

Well, looks like this one is going to the dealer. Biggest problem for me is admitting defeat before I even start but a man has to understand his limitations. Thank you all.

Just as a note, 56K miles is pretty low for needing rear bearings. Did you lift the car and give the wheels the old wiggle test as a diagnosis? If its tight, look at worn tires, they will give you a pretty good rumble, a lot like a bad bearing.
