The second generation tensioners, with the addition of the spring, occurred in October '98 therefore you should have them.

Time and heat can break them down too. You probably do not have a problem at this time, but the thought of a destroyed engine would scare me. It is easy to check the upper tensioners (these are the problem ones) and it would give you peace of mind.

Would someone post the guide on the chain tensioners and how to determine which generation someone would have, please?

I am in the total dark about this but my car has been driving a little rough and the XK8 2002 is at 125K miles.

Thanks!

I have a 2000 XK8. I changed the upper tensioners at 40,000 miles. They were the second generation ones with the spring. They appeared quite robust, but had a design flaw and were just starting to crack at the bottom of the cylinder. I have posted pictures in detail. If you do a search on my handle you will find them. There is another thought. We had one post about a late production 2002 that was the 4.0 engine, but it had the very latest cam drive system that everyone thought only was in the 2003 4.2 engine. Who knows you might be lucky. He certainly was.
