Default XKR coupe for sale, too good to be true?

I saw this listing on Craigslist, today, and would consider adding it to my collection, it's so reasonable. However, there is something fishy. In the first picture of the interior, there is the wooden shift knob that was stock for 2001. In the second picture of the interior, you can see the shifter of the later models with the chrome and leather shifter and you can see the 6-spd gate as opposed to the 5 spd. one that would have been appropriate for 2001.

If you look att the grains of the dash, especially left of the instrument cluster you see it is not the same interiour.

Yes it looks strange or amateurish use of Craigslist.

He may have added the newer shifter knob but the car is obviously not fwd. I tend to be suspicious of Craigslist so I'd be real careful.

I sent him an email just to see what the response would be. I'm sure this is a scam and photos cobbled together from other ads. I just find it amusing that the attempt is so amateurish.

I don't think there's any scam involved - if you google the phone number you'll find the guy is a real estate agent. You'll note he left out the mileage, which probably means it's 150,00+. He also describes the condition as merely "good", not 'excellent', not 'very good'. Hence, I don't think there's any deal here that's 'too good to be true'. Since the car is nothing special he took some shorcuts by 'borrowing' someone elses photos. If you're interested, call him out on this and use it as ammo to negotiate the price lower.

There was nothing 'unusual' I could see, the shifter easily replaced (note the non-stock rims so he put some $ into it) Dash is just bad lighting and I wouldn't make a call on that pic. But good condition as others mention for someone wanting to get in and maybe doing some work it's be worth it.

The grain on the dash differs greatly between the two pictures. One shows light colored grain detail, the other is more burled. I refinished antiques for over 15 years and will say that without a doubt, those are pictures of two different interiors, a.k.a two different cars.

Judging from steering wheel position, angles of the sun and views from within the car, the photos were taken on at least two (probably three) separate occasions. So the possibility of the shift knob just being changed between photos is realistic. I agree it is no doubt a very high mileage car, but from the photos on hand looks a bit better than "Good". Exterior paint caught my eye though - there is a noticeable difference between the bonnet/wings and the front bumper/snoot.

Not too sure about the dash grain. But I don't think it's enough to make me really suspicious.

I took a big risk when I bought mine with 103K miles on it for almost twice what this guy's asking. A year and a half later I "did" have to put another engine in her, but to tell you the truth, I don't think I'm all that "upside-down" after having driven her 60+K miles in less than three years.

At this asking price, you can take on a lot of risk...... if you're that kinda guy (no sarcasm implied - we're all different)

Good luck!

You know - I have a 2001 XKR and the wood dash is very milky and pretty plasticy-looking. I'm guessing they posted other pictures of the interior with a better wood finish.

In case you don't know, that was a manufacturing flaw that affected most 2001 Jags, not just the XK's. When under warranty, Jag covered the cost of refinishing the wood.

*sigh*, yeah, unfortunately I got the car a couple months ago, and apparantly it wasn't fixed under warranty

No chance they'd be cool with doing it anyway, eh? :P I hate that plasticy faded look.

Several refinishers mentioned here if you're willing to spend the bucks.

I agree with scardini1. Number of pictures from different days. The shift knob? Nothing strange here, he took off the beautiful wood grain knob and put a -R knob in it's place. I'd do the same thing. I have that wood knob in my XJ8 and it's beautiful.
Regardless of mileage, after all it is 14 years old.
If the engine and tany are good, it' would be an excellent buy for someone that wants a beautiful car...................

I don't believe it. The two photos that show the dash are not remotely similar. There is a large dark "vein" under the left most gauge that does not appear on the other photo. And the shift knob is from the 6 speed 2003+ model years.
Finally, I have attempted to reach the owner and have gotten no response.

Scam is written all over this.
