The engine serial number is stamped on a raised pad on the front of the engine block near the thermostat housing.

Found this on the web. Not sure if the location is correct. My 2001 XK8 is near the water pump housing. Nearly impossible to see.

Engine Numbers ***
The engine number is located on a vertical rib on the left side of the block, just above the steering rack.
The number can only be viewed from underneath. Engine numbers are ten digits long and break down
as follows:
First and second digits: Year of manufacture* *
Third and fourth digits: Month of manufacture* *
Fifth and sixth digits: Day of the month of manufacture* *
Seventh and eighth digits: Hour of manufacture* *
Ninth and tenth digits: Minute of manufacture* *

If your engine number is prior to 000818xxx, it has Nikasil bores.

The engine number looks like this, still difficult to even get a picture. I still can't read the last 4 numbers.

I've been reading up a lot on Nikasil cylinders and it is really interesting. If you have it, you may not need to worry about it at all. Most of these engines (in the USA at least) are perfectly fine as our better petrol has had little sulfur in the early days. High sulfur content was ruining the Nikasil surface.

Nikasil was and still is used in some F1 racing engines and Porsche and others. It transfers heat more evenly, much harder than steel liners, makes for a much lighter engine, and has less friction which allows for a higher top RPM and more torque too.

The AJV8 is an engineering marvel. 440lbs, with superior cooling, lubrication, light weight, etc.

Always use the best fuel, the cleanest fuel you can find.

I'm not too worried about the nikasil engine these days,i had an 1996 xk8 that had a new engine but that was in 2003. The only problem i was thinking of was the chain ect but i removed the cam cover over the weekend and it's got the new chain so happy days
