XKR Remote Battery Fob

XKR Remote Battery Fob
Hi
As you may have seen from a previous thread; I have just bought a 1999 XKR. The lock, unlock and boot release buttons on the remote key fob were working intermitently (but the lights button worked every time, wierdly...) so assuming the batteries were dying, I changed them.
Now the fob doesn't work at all and I know the batteries are good. Having read the hand book I can see the fob sometimes gets de-coded (although I am sure I did not press any buttons while changing the battery)
Is this the only explanation and is there a way of me fixing it without taking into Jag to be done?
Many thanks
Karl

Trunk open, drivers door open, left foot on ground, pull back and hold the bright hi beam stalk and turn the key to the first position. Now flash the light stalk 4-5 times youll hear a chirp that the security module is in programming. Press the unlock on the remote, it should tone again then turn key on and off that should reprogram the remote unless theres a fualt

no thats keys not remotes, except the new smart keys. You dont need all the remotes for back door programming. And only need them if using the IDS and then selecting yes when it ask if you want to delete..The tongue position only matters if your wife/GF is doing the programming in a dress, then the left leg out REALLY matters...

There are differences on some models for back door programming. Some doors and trunk open some not..i have a life other than memorizing the different models and requirements...but is doesnt matter if you have them open if not required, and yes you can program a single remote, ive done it for years, but keys you cant

Thanks Brutal.
I am trying that as we speak. But I must be honest I am struggling keeping my left foot on the ground. I assume this is because I am in England and therefore sitting on the "wrong" side of the car. I will keep trying but my neighbours are now looking at me a bit strange.

no.
drivers door closed.....
foot on brake....
radio off...
and while holding you left ear lobe with your left hand(this all switches to the right if youre on the OTHER side of the pond) switch the ignition on/off quickly 4-5 times till you get a chime for being in program or learn mode. remove key hit the disarm on each remote then reinsert 1 key and turn igition on then off.
take out key and hit remote (press the buttons ) to verify and your done...
Note...if it doesnt work the first time....try moving the seat to the closest seating position to the steering wheel....be sure and tilt the steering wheel up first if youre a food lover...

This is the first post of a newby to the forum!
Unusually Im not seaking advice, which makes a change!
I have a newly aquired 1999 XK8 which is my current pride and joy!
Its in excellent condition, low mileage and well looked after.
The only issue I've had with it was the key fob wouldnt operate the central locking etc as per the subject of this thread.
I tried and retried the reprograming instructions which have been mentioned here (apart from the left leg and ear lobe parts!!)
All to no avail as there were no beeps to indicate the security module was in program mode.
BUT..... I eventually did notice that the red LED at the J-box gear shifter was flashing each time I pressed a button!
Hey presto!! I pressed button 5 times and 5 flashes was the response!
Turned ignition off and got out the car.
Holding my breathe (probably not necessary), pressed lock and it worked!!
And so does the trunk open, lights on and unlock buttons!!
Lesson learned...... dont be misdirected by the fact that no beeps occur.
Just watch the LED.
If it flashes then your in business!!

Thanks 2 those who have gone before me...
Thank you to all of you who have posted before me.
Keeping the foot on the ground while programming the remote is to be in addition to holding the mouth just right with the tongue extended to the left side of the mouth. Unless of course you are in the UK. Then the opposite applies.
Whoever thought doors & trunks would have to be open with lights on to program a remote fob.
For some reason my remote fob failed after installing a new battery. I couldn't get the car to lock at all.
But hey it worked. I feel a great sense of accomplishment.
I appreciate you all sharing this information.

New Key fob programming
I was thinking of getting a second key fob for convenience. If I purchase a new/used key fob off of ebay (for example) can I program it for my XK8/XKR using this method, or does it have to be the original key fob from the manufacturer in order for this process to work?

While I am sure that a little elf did not create the Jaguar FOB at a magical work bench in a secret part of a Jaguar factory, I am sure that finding a FOB with the correct part number on the back will make programming a lot easier.
The part number MUST match.
Bought them off eBay for less than $20, sold them for more than $60. All worked.
