Default XKR Starts and Stalls - Codes P1316 & P0506 (Update: Primary Fuel Pump Faliure)

Hi all,

I was just wondering if anyone can give me some help as towhat this problem might be or where to start looking.

It was parked up outside for about 2 months over winter, butwhen I went back to start it, the car fired up as normal, the revs dropped backto about 800rpm for about a second or two and then just stalls.

It starts every time but refuses to idle.

I can rev the car once or twice, but it wont run for morethan a few seconds whatever I try.

I have managed to retrieve the ODB codes:
P1316 “Unknown Diagnostic Trouble”
P0506 “Idle Air Control System RPM Lower Than Expected”

My car is a 2001 XKR, 100k miles on the clock.
I’ve owned it for 3 years, always had it serviced at itsscheduled intervals and its always run like a dream until now.

Thanks in advance

The P 1316 code is actually Misfire excess emission
ECM to ignition coil primary circuit fault
(Cylinder misfire detected DTC also
flagged)
Fuel injector circuit fault(s)
(Injector DTCs also flagged)
Ignition coil failure
Spark plug failure / fouled / incorrect gap
Cylinder compression low
Fuel delivery pressure (low / high)
Fuel injector(s) restricted / leaking
Fuel injector(s) continuously open
Fuel contamination
Worn camshaft / broken valve spring(s)

so you should also have a cylinder code flagged to say which coil/plug is faulty.
Are you sure there are no other codes apart from the P0506 ?
Air intake restriction
Accessory drive overload
(defective / seized component)
Throttle valve stuck closed
Throttle body failure

These cars have developed a history of fuel pump issues that seem to appear after being in storage as in over Winter . . . or maybe 2 months. Big jump in reports in Spring. Your 'R' has two pumps and one could have failed earlier and the last one is having problems.

Check the fuel pressure at the Schrader valve on the fuel rail.

My Volvo did that when it needed a new MAF sensor. Might want to clean it just for good measure. Also, with the air intake restriction code, do you have mice living in your filter box?

Hi again.

There were no other error codes.

I cleared the codes and started the car about 30 times with the same issues (fires up normally, revs drop as usual to the point where it should idle, but just goes lumpy and stalls) Still wont run for more than a few seconds.

After checking for error codes after the 30 odd starts its now not displaying any despite all the same issues.

I have checked the air intake, air box, air filter and MAF. All clean with no blockages.

I've ordered a fuel pressure gauge and will be able to check the fuel pressure in a few days.

Do the fuel pump relays ever play up? Or would it be most likely the fuel pump?

Thanks

Hi Guys,

I managed to check my fuel pressure today.

When I switch the ignition on I get a solid fuel pressure reading of about 44psi. I get this pressure consistently every time I turn the ignition.

As soon as I start the car, the fuel pressure immediately starts dropping to nothing where the car stumbles and stalls.

I have added a vid clip here:

Is there any chance it could be the relays playing up?

Those relays are controlled by the ECM. Can you jump them to run the car long enough to see if you get any other codes?

I'm going to wager its one of the two fuel pumps. I don't know why, but they love to die when attempted start from sitting awhile. I hope not, but that's where my spidey senses are leading me.

My money is on fuel pump number 1. It sounds as if fuel pump number 2 is priming the system and fuel pump number 1 never operates.

To confirm this, remove the fuel pump number 1 relay in the trunk fuesbox (see diagram). Then try to start the car. After the 5th or 6th attempt at starting, the car should detect the missing relay and start and continue running on fuel pump number 2. This may get your vehicle running, but obviously it is a temporary workaround.

Fuel pump number 2 normally only primes the system and is called into duty during high throttle demand. When the fuel pump 1 relay is missing or failed, the ECU will use it as a substitute for fuel pump 1.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for your help, Im pretty sure that its also the primary fuel pump thats stuffed, Im sure thats going to be a fun job lol.

I did notice someone on this forum has posted about changing the fuel pumps the the sub in the parcel shelf. Has anyone else managed this?

WhiteXKR, you posted a diagram of the fuel relays, but I think in the UK its a different layout. I've attached a photo of the fuses/relays in my boot.
I only have Fuel pump 1 relay as shown on your dagram.
Fuel pump relay 2 doesnt seem to exist.

I had a look in my handbook and it only showed the 1 relay for mine, so Im assuming it does both fuel pumps?

Thanks for your help

You are missing some relays because you have a coupe, not because it is a UK vehicle. The one relay separate from the 'T' configuration is the fuel pump 2 relay.

It is the main fuel pump 1 relay (that you have labeled) that you should pull for the test. All 4.0 liter XKRs have two fuel pumps and two relays.

Thanks for the info WhiteXKR

When I got home this evening I popped out the primary fuel relay, started it up and . . . . . it ran!

So at least (thanks to all your help) I have now identified the prolem as a dead primary fuel pump. So changing that is my next job.

Are both the fuel pumps in the tank the same type?

And has anyone reading this thread changed the fuel pumps through the speaker hole in the parcel shelf the same way this this guy did it:
https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...bwoofer-70631/

Thanks again all

Great!

Yes the pumps are the same. Consider replacing both.

Also, make sure you check the wire leads to the pump in the tank for electrical continuity. Sometimes they visibly burn, other times the molded in electrical filter has opened up and failed due to excessive load.

Yes, in a coupe you can service it through the subwoofer.

Hi again guys,

Just having a look through my manual and it only shows 1 fuel pump in the tank. Where is the other one? As the XKR has 2 pumps.

I dont suppose anyone has a picture showing the inside of an XKR tank showing the fuel pumps that they can post up?

Looks like they come out easy enough with just one fixing.

Thanks

Also, whats the usual cost of a fuel pump?

I've found OE quality ones for £90 in the UK.
OE Quality Jaguar | Euro Car Parts UK

There are cheaper ones at around £70 but I dont want to fit bad quality ones thats likely to pack up after a few years.

And any recomendations?

Thanks

Well my fuel pumps have arrived and I'll be fitting them this weekend

But can anyone tell me what the bolt is securing them to the fuel tank? Im guessing something like an 8mm Hex bolt?

And how do you remove the fuel pumps from the holders?

Thanks again

Ok, I have the fuel pumps out, the the replacement ones I purchased have different type connectors and are supplied with a seperate connector (designed for the new fuel pumps) with about 5" of wire attached.

It it normal to have to cut off the existing jaguar leads and solder new ones on? This doesnt sound right to me and Im a reluctant to have to do this.

I take it I should be able to buy fuel pumps with the correct connectors?

Cheers

Ok, I've attached a picture showing the the connector I need.

Can anyone tell me where I can get this?
Or should the lead that came with my pumps already had this attached?

Thanks
