Default Differential

Greetings,
Change out my differential fluid yesterday. I am surprise the gears didn't grind or nothing. The fluid was very low and black. Very hard to pump out since it was thick, the plug had about a 1/4 inch of sludge stuck to it. The job was really easy and even had my daughter help.....daddy moment. The new fluid went in like a charm and believe it or not, that was my lurching issue. Thanks all and have a great day!

How many miles are on your car? I changed mine out at I think 75k and it was black (and horrible smelling) but no sludge.

I'm replacing both my rear axle seals due to them leaking. And will be changing the fluid at the same time (obviously). I will be using Royal Purple 75w140

I used Amsoil 75/140 severe gear oil that a few forum members suggested. I now have 100094 miles on my 08 Jaguar S type

Did you do as projected? I got a leaking one these days one mine (see signature) - can you tell if the axles are locked inside the diff housing or can they just be pulled out? My mech asked me to find out and before I get my old PC with JTIS working again...

It depends on which diff you have. Is it the Ford/Visteon 8" or the GKN diff?

You can see the difference in this thread, where the Ford/Visteon unit was removed and replaced with the GKN. https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...97/#post960840

Seals are available as spares for the 8" but not for the GKN as far as I know...

OK, I've heard enough! Just noticed a whine from the diff when foot comes off the gas. 75k miles on the clock. Going to change the oil asap, Amsoil 75/140 going in.

Thanks, everyone.

I'm afraid oil change will not take away the diff whine. I'm betting you can sustain the whine around 55 - 60 mph with light to moderate load. If so, the oil is not the culprit, it's the internal bearings where preload is not correct and allowing the bearing raceway to resonate. I would love to be proven wrong on this however.

It's definitely a no-load whine, only when my foot comes off the gas. I hope you're wrong, but fear you may be right. Amsoil 75/140 goes in at end of March. I will let you know.

Well, better late than never. Actually, the diff was drained, flushed and refilled with high-quality 75/140 gear oil just last week. Old oil was black crud.

Great news! Car now drives without a sound from the diff.

Robin, that's encouraging news. Can you share how the diff was flushed?

Desertchimera, now that you know you had mud in the gears, only run a little while and change it out again, this will help clean the mud out. Do this till what comes out is pretty clean.

Checked with my indie - old oil sucked out while warm, refilled with new oil, car driven until warm, sucked out again, refilled again. I guess that's how he translated my request to 'flush'. 45 minutes labor.

Ok, thanks for that. I suppose multiple drain and fill is a sort of flush. I will change mine again this summer and let you know if any improvement is seen. I still get the whine around 55mph with light throttle.

I got the diff whine too. Obvious on accel/decel, quiet on cruise. Changed diff oil today with the Amsoil. Old oil was full of glitter, but normal viscosity and smell. Also, oil was completely full. Magnet on plug was completely packed with powder. Cleaned the magnet and replaced the fluid and the whine is significantly reduced. I'll clean the magnet again next week to see how it looks.

I'm looking for parts to put together an LSD assembly at my convenience. According to the info I see, a Ford 8.8" diff case should fit the stock housing on my car.

Thanks for the update. I'll book it to drain and fill my diff again this spring.
