Default Dodged a bullet - Rear differential

Well as some of you may know, shortly after buying my XJ I began to hear the rear differential whine, concerning......

I called the aftermarket warranty company that covered the car from when I bought it via the dealership and initiated a claim.

To be honest I didn't hold out much hope but thought I'd give it my best shot.

The car was booked in to the local Indy and the warranty enginer came out to inspect it, we got on fairly well and he agreed it was the rear diferential problem, and would look into it further.

I got the call today, that they are standing by their warranty and paying for the full, all singing all dancing replacement. This will be the superseded / upgraded version to include new prop shaft and drive shafts, a total of over £3000 + vat + labour, so a hefty sum!!

Needless to say I'm over the moon

Congratulations, Jim! Sounds like your aftermarket warranty return on investment is positive!

Let us know how the new diff and propshaft perform.

Cheers,

Don

Thanks Don, much appreciated.

I didn't actually buy the aftermarket warranty, it came supplied with the car, which makes it even sweeter I guess.

I just can't understand how the Scots got this reputation for being 'careful' with money.

Of course I'm pleased, only a fool would want to pay £4k if they didn't have to

He said "over the moon" ... I don't want to be seeing the revised upskirt of the kilt though

I did have an alternative remove / repair / replace option lined up at Mackies for around £700 - £1000 but this is a wayyyyy better option

Might pay to have a good look in the mirror see if it really happened (LOL)

Congratulations not often we the consumers win just look at the aftermarket warranty offices and managers cars and you will understand

Quick question your XJ is a diesel isn't it if so when they open the diff can we find out the ratio

I have been wanting to change my XJ8 2.87 diff to 3.06 gears been told a diesel is the 3.06 ratio gears but irrefutable proof would be handy

count the number of teeth on the pinion gear and the crown gear.

then crown gear teeth/pinion gear teeth = x:1 gear ratio

Jim,

I would pay good money for some good photos of the inside of your diff. I admit that my personal threshold at which an expenditure constitutes "good money" is pretty low, but nevertheless, I'd pay good money! Let the guys at Prestige know they'll be helping lots of other Jaguar owners _and_ getting a free plug on the forum and I'm sure they'll be happy to accommodate a little photo session. :-)]

Cheers,

Don
