Default Knocking noise behind dash

2001 XKR.
Got a knocking noise which seems to be coming from behind the dash, and very noticeable on even slightly rougher surfaces. Had the steering and suspension checked out by garage and that's OK.
If I want to do some investigating myself how do I get the dash off?
Had a trawl through the forum threads but couldn't find anything which helps.

There definitely was at least one thread in the past year or so. In my case it was the defroster vent that rattled and I just stuffed some foam between it and the windshield.

In my case, there was a wire running behind the far left defroster vent ( UK near side ) that previously taped in, but the tape wasn't sticking anymore. I covered it in silicone to stick it which fixed it.

The diagonal brace in the engine bay being loose at the bulkhead has also been mentioned.

Check the 3 Forward Dash Mounting Torx Bolts for Tightness.

Using a Putty Knife, gently pry the Dash Speakers loose and check the Bolts underneath.

Also the Middle Bolt behind the small Plastic Cover.

Hello, I had a knock that seemed to becoming from the dash, after removing all the vents and the glove compartment I discovered that it was coming from the shock mounts.

The sound was like a dull metal on metal.
Very annoying, especially on bumpy road, not so much on smooth road.

The mounts that come up inside the engine compartment just above the wheels, the mounts were bad, the shock bolt that is supposed to be centered was leaning to the side, so when the car hit a bump the shock bolt would hit the metal side and because there is a stabilizer bar connected from the shock area to the firewall area in front of the dash the sound from the bad mounts telescoped and made it sound as if the knock was coming from the dash area on the inside of the cabin.

Had new shock mounts put in and absolutely no knocking any more.
True story!

Check the shock bolts and see if they are centered if not chances are that's your knock sound.

Good luck and
Happy motoring...

This is only the case on the verts though. What is yours?

I thought that this was loose, it turned out to be the shock top mount with the sound being transferred to the dash area via the strut brace.
