Talking Rear spoiler fitting.

Hello guys, I have just bought a rear spoiler for my 1999 XK8, it needs painted and fitting. I would like some advice on fitting to the boot lid/trunk please. It appears that the base is double sided rubber tape and there are three locating prongs on the unit. My question is where do I drill the holes for the locating pins? Has anyone done this before? Or would it be best to cut the pins off and just use double sided tape?
Thunderbird one is in storage now but I am buying bits over the winter to spread the cost.
Many thanks for any replies.

Regards,
Arty

Go buy a roll of blue painters tape. Place it on the underside of the spoiler to make a template. Then trim with a razor blade. Mark the location of the holes etc. Peel the template off and lay it on the trunk. Make sure it is centered. You can attach It to the trunk with more tape - the point here is to mark the Bolt holes. I would put tape on the trunk as well. Mark the bolt holes carefully.

Then first make sure there is tape on the trunk and the hole is marked - the tape will stop the drill bit from walking - skipping across your shiny paint. Take a small diameter bit and start the hole in the center. Firm but not overbearing pressure. You don't need to go all the way through / this is the guide point for the tip of the proper sized drill bit. Make sure you use a fresh bit and make your hole. Repeat for the rest.

If the spoiler is aftermarket it may require some finagling to fit 100%.

Hope this helps.

George

I had a few red ones so thats why I had pics..... The other guy bought something else off me which will not be ready until end of next week so I offered him the blue one which he took......

If you want to pay for postage I will swap them lol

Its not in bad condition either just a small mark on one end you could get away with putting in straight on.... It's sapphire blue if that is the colour of your XK

Easiest thing to do Arty is use Yodel, find the box and send the red one back, I will then put the blue one in the box and you can arrange collection from me back to you....... Will cost you around £14 for the lot.....

Something I will add the blue spoiler has the plastic pins already cut off..... You can not buy XKR boot lids they are all XK8 so no holes, so if it has been replaced at some point you will always find the pins cut off the spoiler......

Ha Ha, guys, sorry for no pics but the car is in storage now for the winter and the spoiler is in my garage, they are 14 miles apart
I can take a pic of the spoiler if you really want??? Ha Ha.
This is one of my smaller projects for next year which are:
1) Fit new grill which is sitting next to the spoiler at this time
2) Fit a new headlining, not bought yet but needs attention.
3) Fit the rear spoiler.
Most other things have been documented on the forum over the last few months, and I have been happy with the progress so far. My only consideration next year is do I put the XK8 or the XJS on the road????

Would LOVE to see a picture of an XK-8 with rear spoiler!

Also: Has anyone messed with sealing the headlamp ballasts to prevent moisture damage? One wrench I talked to worried that heat could be "trapped", doing damage to ballast or surroundings. Seems to me if that were the case, the ballast should have "fins" or some other heat sink.
Of course, "fins" could be added...
Thanks to all.

Default Pics

Went up to where the cars are stored to pay for this winter....disaster my friend is handing over the barn to another for sheep!!!! So its my last year for storage, may have to sell one of the cars.
However I took up the spoiler Tony sold me and placed it on the boot and took a few pics. Not sure exactly where its supposed to sit, any advice appreciated. Will fit it and the front grill in the spring, hopefully.

Cheers,

Arty
