Jaguar I-PACE Sets EV Lap Record at Laguna Seca

By -

Hotshoe Randy Pobst wheels ‘showroom stock’ Jaguar I-PACE around Laguna Seca faster than any other EV.

The Jaguar I-PACE is a big deal in the automotive sphere. It represents a real threat to the electric vehicle monolith that is Tesla. In fact, when we drove the I-PACE a few months ago, we were shocked at how capable, and compromise-free it was, seemingly in all arenas. On road, off road, and even at the race track, it was unflappable. There aren’t too many EVs that handle repeated lapping around a circuit without overheating, but the I-PACE is one of them.

So it’s no surprise that the I-PACE forms the basis of the new I-PACE eTrophy racing series. The stock powertrain is solid, throw some sticky tire, big(ger) brakes on it and a roll cage inside and you’ve got a competent, and very unique racer.

It should not come as a surprise for an electric vehicle that we loved, and has a racing series now formed around it, that if you put a racing driver behind the wheel, that it’s going to do big things. Now, the Jaguar I-PACE has another accolade under its belt: production lap record.

Jaguar teamed up with Motor Trend and racing driver Randy Pobst to catalogue the endeavor. Pobst and Motor Trend took a ‘showroom stock’ Jaguar I-PACE and hit the pavement at Weathertech Raceway Laguna Seca to see what’s what. The end result is an astonishing 1:48.18 lap time, making the I-PACE the fastest four-door EV around the storied race track. Talk about a great way to kick off Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance.
