Default *Oil Debate*5w-20 WSS M2C925-A OR 0w-20 STJLR.51.5122

This is straight from the repair manual for the V6

I'd rather run the 5W-20 as it comes in the WSS-M2C925-A spec by Mobil 1 and Motul, both brands I've used regularly in my previous cars. Its also cheaper and readily available.

The 0w-20 STJLR spec...created for fuel consumption? I doubt that there are engineering differences in the engine from between model years that require the 0w-20 especially since the sidebar indicates that both weights can be mixed.

Probably a topic thats been discussed before but curious as to what you guys with the higher miles ultimately went with.

My dealer puts this stuff in mine at service: Castrol Edge Professional OE 5W-20. I don't have strong feelings about it, but whatever dealer uses should be good enough for Jag and warranty I assume.

Castrol Edge Professional OE (Gold Bottle) is presently the ONLY oil that meets the Jaguar indicated standard. Per what I have been told, it has a unique additive package AND it has a UV Dye added.

I have no knowledge other than what I have been told. The oil is also, ONLY available from Jaguar dealers and not sold retail anywhere else in the US.

Yup. I'm curious as to what changed between the 2014 to 2015+ models though that requires the use of the Castrol STJLR spec oil where as 2014 models can use either or.

(I know all about temp and viscosity, so no need to get the thread derailed...)

May I suggest that you get hold of the oil recommendations from
a UK market vehicle and consider whether there are any differences.

For the reasoning behind this, see the opening post of the thread:

The first edition of the US manual in 2014 called for 0W-20 only. There was an addendum (which was posted here somewhere) that added the 5W-20 option.

The manual for my 2016 R says SAE 0W-20 STJLR.51.5122
I was unable to find it at any local retailers. So I looked online and was only able to find large quantities, which I did not think I would need. So I talked to the mechanic at dealership in Portland who told me to use Castrol Edge SAE 5W-20. Not sure why JLR missed this oversight??

Will you be changing the oil yourself (in addition to what the dealer will be doing per the Jag-specified intervals)? If so, consider getting your dealer's blessing that Castrol Edge 5W-20 is OK to use in lieu of the 0W-20 STJLR.51.5122. This can be as simple as adding an extra line to the invoice after your next dealer-performed service.

+1. As long as you have it documented by a dealer, you're covered warranty-wise, and you can stop worrying about it.
