16 F Type R active exhaust issue - not valve problem
Has anyone else had an issue with the active exhaust where the snapping and popping disabled itself? The valves function properly and remain open in active mode, but the spark to initiate the pops and snaps in the exhaust seems to disable itself.
I notice this mostly when driving in manual mode, driving aggressively, and you're on and off the throttle often - tight back roads twisties. Although I have also seen this a few times while cruising in manual mode maintaining speed, where again you're on and off throttle constantly, but in this case not aggressively at all - just maintaining speed with slight on and off throttle.
I've had it into the dealer once. They couldn't reproduce it and without and error code there was nothing they could do.
I have another appontment, but they can't get me in for two weeks, like always - I take my rover to the same dealer, Marin luxury cars. Curious if any other owners have experienced this issue?

I also have a '16 R and not only do I notice that it sometimes gets a little quieter after doing some spirited driving, it also becomes slightly less responsive. I have the VAP tune and have noticed the condition regardless of if I am running the tune or stock.
I recall Stuart from VAP commenting in a thread that these cars suffer from cat over temp issues which will trigger protection modes. Heat soak issues have also been discussed a few times. One or the combination could be setting off some of the protection modes, causing the quieter exhaust and weakened response after bouts of spirited driving.
I notice my car growls, pops and runs much better when it's cooler out. It's an absolute beast when the temperature is around 50 degrees out.

Ain't that the truth! I get pretty good grip with the AWD, but no chance in Trac DSC... it will skip all over if you mash the pedal.
I think we're onto something with the o2 sensor update and heat related. It's definitely more common in high heat conditions. I'll check out the o2 sensor threads and call the dealer again tomorrow. Thanks all.

It happens on my car too. Somedays it wants to pop and crackle all day, and others it decides just to chill. After spirited driving the pops and crackles will mellow out as well. I think its normal.
OP and others, did you guys get anywhere with the JTB update?
This is probably far fetched, but my 2017 R seems relatively quiet compared to my previous 2016 R--I question what software I have from the factory--one would think the latest and greatest. My build was 11/16. Perhaps I'll eventually end up with more crackles and pops as my exhaust breaks-in. I only have approx 600 miles. But to me, I think my '17 is much quieter.

All I had to do was quote the JTB number and the dealer applied a newer version of code to the one I was on.
When was the last time your car received a software update? K309 was applied around March 2016 and a newer version of code was applied around August 2016 when I took it back in for the JTB. So the newer code was released sometime around Summer 2016 I believe. If your car hasn't been updated since then it's probably a fair assumption you don't have the latest and greatest.
Show them this screenshot, ask them to look up and read the TSB and confirm that they have performed the action prescribed in it.
You can also ask them to provide you with the current version of software running - they have no valid reason to refuse to give you this information.
Beyond that if they still push back escalate to JNA.

Update: no resolve. The dealer says my car has the latest software applied and there are no updates too apply.
I was was able to take the tech on a test drive and was able to demonstrate the issue within about 30 seconds.
Very frustrating and not sure how to proceed. Any other insights are much appreciated.

good idea. I'll have to confirm myself. The dealer says they have tested the vacuum operation of the valves and confirmed working as normal. I also notice when this issue arrises, it sounds like the valves are open as the exhaust note is much throatier. It's just missing the snap crackle pop bit, but by no means is it in quiet mode.
On the phone with JNA now.

And JNA is telling me this is normal operation and to sit and twist.
After a fair amount of argument, I pointed out that every other f Type does not do this. So they finally agreed to open a new tech ticket.
the saga continues.....

Just an update for everyone; I tested a MY 2017 R and it did not function the same way mine does. I'm dropping mine back off at the dealer again today. I still suspect this is a result of the k309 update, for whatever reason my cars seems to be heavily affected.
Ive been working with Mike at JNA, he's the only Mike there. If any of you are having issues, I would advise you complain to JNA, ask for Mike if you can. The more people that complain, the more likely we are to get a fix.
Thanks all.

Two things happen to make the pop/crackle; first the valves open a piece of straight pipe in the exhaust that bypasses the muffler, second its inducing spark from the spark plugs when an exhaust valve is open to ignite the gasses and send a crack down the tailpipe.
