Bye bye v6
Just read on CARBUZZ that after '16 Jag is replacing 3.0 SC V6 with turbocharged straight 6 from newer Jag/LR series engines. Supposedly for world wide fuel economy . Quote"should offer improved smoothness, more power and better efficiency". Ingenium series engine! They quoted Motor Trend.
Don't post up a link or something....

They have done an amazing job with the F-Type exhaust so far. I am sure they will not let us down... Let's hope anyway....
Most likely more like the current M3/M4.
The sound wizards will really have to come up with a miracle, but it won't be nearly as exotic sounding.
I realize JLR doesn't have any choice to get to increasingly restrictive worldwide CAFE standards.

I hope not - my M4 sounded like a broken lawnmower

I know, hence the sad emoticon. Straight six architecture + turbo = exhaust tones that most car nuts find inferior to other choices.
The Range Rover has the same 550hp V8 as the R coupe and that is quiet and smooth as can be, while the R coupe is a snarly, cracking, popping monster.
Yes, it will probably take some extreme effort to make a turbo engine sound as good as our current SC lineup.
On the plus side, with the inherent smoothness of an I6, JLR could make it a high-revving (8k RPM), high-output engine whose performance might make you forget the lower exhaust sound quality. The induction sound of a smooth spinning high RPM engine could very well balance out or even outweigh the exhaust note at high revs.
Agreed, and I'll keep an open mind. A NA straight-six can sound delightfully, rich, and silky smooth. I've got to believe BMW tried to get the twin-turbo, I6 up to enthusiast caliber acoustics, but I think it's a failure in that regard.
However, Jaguar seems to put a higher premium on this dimension and seems to go to greater lengths to achieve it. Nonetheless, engine architecture (cylinder number and layout) always dictates what you can do with the acoustics, and forced air adds another layer of complication. For example, it's very hard to make a V-10 sound pleasing no matter what you do.

I will try to keep an open mind til I have actually heard it, but it will be very difficult to match the sound of a supercharged or na engine with a turbocharged one. The turbo will muffel the sound no matter what they do otherwise.
Just listen to the F1 after they turbocharged those engines, even though the displacement was drastically reduced as well.
I think this is going to be a very difficult task for the engineers....

Frankly I think it's crazy...manufactures went away from a straight design for packaging reasons,I cannot see the point in going backwards.
I guess at least with a straight design, there should be more room on the sides to hang the hairdryers...but I don't get that either.
The old saying still somewhat applies here..."Injection is nice but I'd rather be blown".

I wonder how well that would fit - at getting on for twice the length quite a few other bits are going to have to be relocated.
The M54 in the shopping car apparently sounds fantastic, but is too quiet to hear while driving...
