Default Coolant replacement

I did some advanced searches and looked in the 'howto"s. If this is answered there, I apologize - please point me in the right direction.

I'm at a point I'd like to replace my coolant (age not miles). Any tips? Any issues? Do I need to do multiple drains and fills (with water) to get the old coolant out?

thanks in advance

Found this searching “coolant change” in the search on the forum here:

Looks like that should be helpful. I’m not ready to do mine, but I think I’ll take a look at this myself and drop it in my DIY maintenance file.

Cheers

I looked into this a while back also. Ended up going to the dealer to replace the cooling pipes and water pump. I asked the dealer to flush the system and asked them to show me how they do it. All they did was drain the radiator, run clear water through it and did this twice before adding the coolant and water. I figured they would have some kind of a coolant flush machine to do this, but they don't. So as you stated, multiple drains and fills. If anyone has a better option, I'm all ears!

Thanks Rondog. I figured it's likely that easy but just wanted to know from someone who's been there. Some engines actually have low point coolant water jacket drain plugs in them that make it a 'one stop shop' (or one time drain!).

Anyone else have experience here?

regards!

Thanks, DMeister as well - from the looks of it reading that link, it may not be worth the trouble to try and pull the plug as Rondog's dealer so concluded!

Just because a dealer did what they did I wouldn’t necessarily say for sure that it was done properly.

Just sayin’ ;-0

Drain it. Vacuum fill with 50/50 Dexcool.

If you take the easy way out and just drain the radiator, you should reduce the replacement interval in the future... since you didn't get all the old coolant out.

My rule of thumb is to use the manufacturer's schedule the first time, then half it afterwards. (So, twice as often)

This assumes that you always use the same kind of coolant as OE...in other words, NO green Prestone!

This will certainly be a bleed and feed iterative process like I did with my '12 Ford Expedition transmission. I'll measure what I remove, refill with clean water and repeat until I get a small enough remnant of the old coolant to meet my druthers, then fill with coolant to meet roughly a 50/50 mixture. I'll let y'all know how many drains to accomplish what I want.
