Default Day trip

Short version: I needed to beat an incoming atmospheric river. I started the trip at just after 8:00 am, stopped for gas twice and pulled into my garage 13 hours later.

UAD Android auto was a lifesaver. I had waze going with Spotify and this helped in picking a route that saved me over 30 minutes. After about ten hours, it's a little challenging trying to find a place to get my right leg comfortable, but that's my only complaint. I drove 4.5 hours, grabbed gas, drove 5.5 hours, stopped for gas again and then brought it home.

If it's accurate that's pretty good gas mileage.

I know that earlier models like mine are about 2mpg higher than if you calculate it yourself.

I’ve done at least 20 13-hour days (900+ miles) in mine, and find it plenty comfortable. I try to stretch and walk a bit at fuel and bladder stops.

Our '14 shows ~ 2 MPG higher than hand-computed fuel usage, also.

I wonder if the Average Speed is optimistic, as well? (If so, don't show it to the Officer when you get pulled over)

I keep a log book. I'll do the math later to get the real figure.

I track mine also. I've averaged over the life of the car 18.4mpg, with the indicated mpg averaging 19.5. Best I ever got was over 27 for a trip to across the Central Valley for a wedding. That's a lot of flat, with no stops and speed mostly 80-85, with a few jaunts to about a wee bit more. I kept it pretty mellow with Mom as a passenger. From what I've seen here over the years, the AT gets considerably better fuel economy than the 6MT, and also accelerates better.

Average speed was spot on. For part of the trip, the speed limit was 75. For much of the rest, i was on I-5 heading up the central valley in CA. If you are doing less than 80, you are getting run over.

My trip was from Tucson, AZ to the Sacramento area. The first 20 miles were getting to the freeway, then I set the CC at 83 mph. The route I took was I-8 towards San Diego then a couple of bypasses to I-5. I-5 was smooth sailing until I got closer to L.A., then it got rough. No quite stop and go, but not smooth sailing. Once to the grapevine, I was able to get back to the cruise control and chew up the miles.

Some frieds asked me "But why didn't you just bypass L.A. and take one of the routes through the high desert"?

Simple. The storms out here have been freaky. The mountain passes have been snow/sleet/hail and fog. I'd rather not deal with that in my car with summer tires. Add to that most people in CA do not know how to drive in the snow and some of the passes were being closed, it made more sense to follow the warm, sunny route towards San Diego and line up for the Grapevine. I did, for curiosity, but other routes into the programs and even though some would have been 30 miles less, they all would have taken longer with the traffic conditions.

I crunched the numbers. 23.9 mpg.

Most of my journeys are fairly short, so a fair percentage of the journey with a coldish engine (and that really kills the economy).
9287.0 miles on 534.948 UK gallons: 17.3606 mpg (12.0370-20.7166, £3605.05, 38.82ppm)

Several times I have been able to travel some distance on the freeway without the usual stop and go traffic and set the cruise control at 70. The trip odometer showed 27 MPG at the end of the drive. But the mileage drops rapidly at speeds above 80 and as eeeeek said, if you aren't doing 80-85 on a lot of freeway stretches here in Southern California you are impeding the flow of traffic.

One thing I have noticed is the trip computer in my car has a bug in it with regards to the average speed. It seems to be stuck between about 35-40 MPH. I have even reset the trip odometer just a block or so from a freeway entrance, got on the freeway for a 50 or 60 mile nonstop run at 70 MPH and at the end of that run the average speed will still show only about 40 MPH. I chalk it up as another one of those weird things about British electronics.

^^^ NOT A PROBLEM, just an idiosyncrasy.

Like our car:

When I flash-to pass the headlamps, the taillights flash too...
And a few of our radio stations have strange IDs. One has always said P1NK despite being reset.

Just Drive On and Enjoy!

You'll probably find that the "British electronics" actually come from somewhere in Europe.

I believe the number 1 source is Germany. (Of course, that's also the home of dieselgate).

My only recurring issue on road trips is with the Navigation. It chronically overestimates my arrival time by 10-20%.

Mine over estimates as well, but I like it. I feel good when I beat the time and it keeps me from being late!

WAZE was shockingly good at estimating my time. 13 hour drive and I arrived within a couple of minutes of the predicted time. I believe it factored in things like the slow down in LA. Now, I did make two gas stops along the way for roughly 5 minutes each. I don't think that Waze predicts gas stops.
