F-Type differential failures
Worryingly there seems to be more and more cases of diff and e diff failures on the f's.
There have been oil leaks documented on quite a few, but worryingly it appears that cars are losing their diffs, evident by strange noises from the rear, at anywhere from 25 ~50k miles.
I'm in the process of collating info (as I did quite a few years ago regarding underbody brace corrosion that got accepted by Jag UK as a build issue) and need help from guys over your side of the pond and beyond.
I'm yet to find any explanations from dealers regarding why the diffs fail, after all they just swap out the whole unit as opposed to diagnose and fix them, but I'd put money o it being oil contamination, and early break down of the lubricating properties perhaps?
So anyone that's had issues, I'd be glad to hear from you, as I would any diagnosis of why failure occurred.
Be good to know which diff/car model and mileage covered too.
TIA

My 2016 F-type S manual transmission suffered differential failure and it was replaced under warranty in 2018. As to cause - my guess that rapid uptake of 2nd generation clutch and lack of damping (i.e. no flex disk) exceeded tolerances and sent it packing.
Mine had a pinion shaft seal leak at 32K miles. I'm at 42K now.
It's too bad we don't have information from disassembly of failed units. I'm not sure the symptoms of failures so can only make broad speculations. Some possibilities, based on experience rebuilding many transaxles:
Improper tolerances leading to premature wear
Improper bearing load, leading to premature wear
Materials failure (manufacturing fault)
Incorrect oil
I'll be watching this thread for more information. I'm not worried, but if it's something I should be keeping an eye on, than I'll do so. I'm also interested in how issues split between different configurations (6/6S/8S/R)

For a great deal of owners, warranty is well past.
My aim is to find thd root cause and either:
a) work out preventative maintenance schedule to ensure they don't fail and/or
b) publicise with magazines etc and ultimately JLRUK to bullitenise the issue/cure etc as was done with the Underbody Corrosion Issues.
Please keep the info coming. Collectively this can be addressed.
Hi Frank here, my16 s coupe, storm gray brogue interior ivory stitching performance seats. I just had my pinion gear seal replaced, 33,700 miles, under warranty.
My car is due for annual service and oil change, in May. I will request that while car is on lift I can inspect underside of car.

So far, we have 5 pinion diff seals posted on the UK forums...

AWD owners have 2 x diffs plus the transfer box to deal with... Guess we will see similar issues once age and mileage creeps up?
Hopefully get more feedback as time goes on...
FWIW I intend to put Fresh BOT720 in soon (around 16k miles) before it gets too contaminated.Oil will be off for analysis for a giggle.
Keeping it clean internally is going to be the savior... So long as your seals aren't weeping of course!

My diff failed. 2015 R, I think it was due to overheating. Not sure, I still have the diff here and haven't opened it. When I drained the original oil there was only like a 1/2 quart in there, no leaks.
My 16 R is at the dealer and they think the diff has failed at 11k, they’re saying lowering the car could void the warranty for it and stock springs need to go back on, such BS. so I have that topic to battle my dealership with...
I can’t see how anyone could argue that a lowered suspension affects the differential.
11K?! Damn mine barely ticked 12k. Now I'm a little nervous. What symptom did you have before the diff potentially failed?
I checked the passport to service book in my owners packet. no where can I find any info on diff fluid change as part of car maintenance?
owners manual also does not list what type of fluid? I find this strange.
anybody have that information?

For the life of the warranty that is!
Anyway I know I have posted the diff fluid specs around here somewhere but for the life of me I can't find it anymore even though I am sure it's in the Workshop Manual.
But from memory I know the diff fluid for both the mechanical LSD on the S and the e-diff on the V8/R is Castrol BOT 720, and it is something else on the "base" non-LSD diff.
And again from memory the wet fill amounts are .8 litres on the S and 1.2 litres on the V8/R.
Hi, I know this is slightly off topic but time/age of oil vs miles. I have a 2017 AWD S with only 5000Km on the clock. (3001 miles) however I am pretty sure it is the same diff oil that was put in when it came off the assembly line in Feb 2017 in Coventry. So it is now 3yrs and 4 months old. I have googled this and everyone just talks about mileage as to when you change the diff oil. However is this oil now degrading and should I change it? Thanks!
