$15k for a new engine (after consideration and relief) with 100,000 miles left on it if far cheaper that $5k for an engine with 10,000miles left on it. As OP found out.
Do it on a per mile basis. (as ownership cost is typically calculated)
$15k for 100,000= 15cents per mile.
Or
$5k for 10,000= 50cents a mile. Or 3x more expensive.
+ Factor in the risk
+ Factor in the loss in performance.
Then factor in what car its going into...
That's like giving a best-of-breed 30 year old a heart transplant from a 70 year old. And you dont know if the 70 year old was a smoker, steroid user, cake eater or junkie.
Guess what...the reason someone is selling an old heart, is not because it was loved and lived a mishap free life.

In a Middle Eastern country, I would think prison time, a public flogging or a stoning, might not be a very pleasant experience.

On a semi-related note...were these engines ever recovered? This story mentions them being recovered but does not go into any detail.

quite a lot here to unpack, I'll try it line by line:

but what makes you think it's going to be $15k for a new engine? so far the best price that's been shown is $25k....

there is a significant logic break here. if we agree the life of the engine is 100k miles, why would he buy a 90k mile engine when there are so many for sale with low miles on them out of wrecked vehicles? Let's say he spends $10k on an engine out of a 4,000 mile car...
like this one:
F-type r AWD died engine-qnynuue.png

so now the question is $10k for a 4,000mi engine or $25k for a 0 mile engine.

$10k / 96,000 miles = $0.10/mile
or
$25k / 100,000 miles = $0.25/mile

difference between a 0 mile engine and a 4000 mile engine is negligible at best

well its a car not a person....I don't really understand the point here, it's the same engine regardless of whether its new or used. its not like the rest of the car is brand new with no wear on it and he's gonna put in a 250k mile engine with 20% leak down....

or someone's selling an old engine because someone else couldn't handle 500hp w/ RWD and spun around into a tree totaling out the car. It's almost like there's an entire industry based off of stripping and selling parts off of wrecked exotic cars.

Unless the OP understands why his engine was destroyed in the first place (his overfilling with oil and perhaps ignoring the suggestion not to drive the car at all...) then even $10.00 spent on a replacement engine will be $10.00 wasted.

That type of thinking can get you into trouble as OP found out.
There is a day and night difference
A used engine even with 4000 miles could be out of a flood damage car.
It could have been pulled due to mechanical problem.
Miles reported could be totally bs.
It wont have all the latest upgrades. (for instance the vital water pump upgrade)

None of those risks exists with a new one.
Just the opposite there is a warranty, that is not a junkyard warranty.
What do you think will happen if he finds out after importing that its not perfect. Its not like the junkyard will send him a new one!

As for the price. Read this thread. A forum member was quoted 14k Pounds. And this was with the consideration and mercy from JLR. And that is the point- he got a new engine for used engine price.

Sov211, I slammed the door pretty hard on the kid's fingers and now paying my dues.
In all reality if it had jumped time, it was doomed regardless of the oil mistake.
See my thread link from above.

simple vin check verifies why the car was written off and the miles -- pretty easy to verify the engine is in working order [most yards will send you a video of the engine running from before disassembly].

additionally, if you buy the engine and its not as described, you can file a credit card dispute [this has been done other times on other forums].

w/ the engine out of the car the vital water pump upgrade is about 3 minutes. I'm quite sure the shop swapping the engine in would be more than willing to swap over a water pump for him.

that thread was four years ago who knows what the cost would be today or what his relationship with the dealer was. That said, if he can get the dealer to replace his engine for $18kUSD [£14k is roughly $18kUSD] he should definitely do that.

doubtful JLR will have mercy on a salvage title rebuilt car though.

.
Right there you made a good point.
Used engines are sold not as described.
No such roll of the dice with a new engine.

YMMV, but I wouldn't count on this.

Chase Sapphire Reserve specifically excludes the following from return protection:
Boats, automobiles, aircraft, and any other motorized vehicles and their motors, equipment, or accessories, including trailers and other items that can be towed by or attached to any motorized vehicle

Additionally:
This benefit is limited to five hundred ($500.00) dollars for each eligible item and up to one thousand ($1,000.00) dollars annual maximum per Account.
