while washing and waxing today, I noticed a VERY small budge on my sidewall. I stopped by my dealer on a drive today and they confirmed that they believe I hit a pothole (I know I did) and stated the cords probably pinched the sidewall.

They are replacing it free of charge because I purchased the tire and wheel protection. No questions asked, very easy to deal with, and happy to take care of me.

Also, while there, I asked about the "Jaguar required engine oil" and found they sold it for $14.00 a quart. This Castrol OE Edge Professional 0w20 apparently is not sold retail in the US, and there are no other oils available that meet the Jaguar spec...

I've found this oil on Ebay for over $20 a quart. I just might but a few cases and resell it myself. (You know people hate going to the dealer to buy oil...)

(And yes, I do know I have free yearly oil changes at the dealer. I tend to like having at least a quart of oil on my garage shelf just in case I need to top off, and, I'll probably change oil more than once per year. I tend to drive my cars fairly hard.)

What is so special about the Castrol OE Edge Pro 0w20 motor oil? I usually prefer to use Mobil 1, couldn't we just use the Mobil 1 version of 0w20? As I understand it, most of the time when companies are being stickers over specific motor oils (particularly in the ultra low viscocity range like 0w20), they are doing so for CAFE reporting purposes not specifically related to the engine characteristics if everything else is equal.

Personally I'll just let the service team handle it on the yearly oil changes, but if I want to do an out of cycle change, I'd like to understand my options.

I have no idea what's so special, but I have contacted Mobil 1, Royal Purple, AMSoil, and others, and they all state that they do have an ANY oil that meets the Jaguar specification that is stated in the owners manual. Castrol even told me they don't RETAIL the specific oil and it is only available to dealers. All the manufacturers told me they had awesome quality oil that would work wonders in the Jag, but if it ever came down to an engine warranty issue, their oils simply did not meet the Jag spec...

 

Wow, I guess I won't complain anymore about the synthetic 10w-60 oil I had to special order for the BMW M I used to have. I guess I'll be letting the dealership take care of the oil changes.

Hmm, thought there was an addendum calling for 5W-20. If unavailable (or ambient temps fall lower than -20C), use 0W-20. It was posted on here somewhere...

My owners manual, and my oil filler cap both call for 0w20. I do know that with every previous car I have owned there was a "range" that was recommended based on the average temperature... I doubt either would have any problems.

 

According to my research, 5w20 and 0w20 should be the same kinematic viscosity at operating temperature and therefore interchangeable. 0w20 is thinner at startup and therefore has a minor advantage in cold climates as it is slightly easier to pump, this can also result in a tiny improvement in fuel economy.

0w-20 is likely recommended over 5w20 due to the potential benefits to fuel efficiency and in cold temperatures. In the warmer months, there should be no reason to worry about 0w20.

At least the above holds true with most cars. I'd verify with your Jaguar service team to be sure, though they may not want you doing your own oil changes and state 0w20 for that reason alone.

Ho much does the tire and wheel protection run? Does it differ for 2015 and 2016 models? Any link for what it covers for how long? Is Track usage excluded or does it void the warranty?

 

I think that's something sold by dealers, not Jaguar, so I imagine it varies. I declined it.

 

My dealer offered it. I paid less than $1000 for 5 years 60,000 miles. If I ever damage a wheel where it is bent or cracked, or won't hold air, the wheel is replaced. Does not cover curb rash... The cool part is if a tire is ever damaged they replace it. Have a nail or screw in the tire? No patch... new tire. Get a sidewall problem from hitting a pot hole. .. we tire... I didn't ask or read fine print about the track, but if it gets damaged, how does anyone know where it was damaged... new tire....

There still needs to be legal tread on the tire, but there is no proration. When my tires get to 4 or 5/32, I might just run over a box of screws for 4 new tires....

I do live in a new development and I have had 5 nails or screws in tires over the past 3 years on my other vehicles.

Also, with this plan, I don't have to buy certificates from discount tire or tire rack...

 

Here is the one I got for $1154 for 5 years. They already paid $550 for a new rear tire (nail in sidewall).

 

I agree that tire and wheel coverage on a car like this is the only dealer warranty add-on likely to be worth the price. I purchased it as well, even though I haven't yet had to use it.

 

I've purchased them and never used it and passed and could have used it for tires. So far the cost of the warranty was greater than my cost of replacement.
