Default Phone mount solution

I went through many threads on forums and Facebook pages looking for ideas to mount a phone cradle in the car. Where I live, if you answer a call while driving the phone must be in a secure cradle.

In the past I've used magnetic mounts, which look sleek and elegant - until you hit a bump and your phone slides off. I wouldn't want my phone to go flying in an accident when I would need it, so I started mounting these motorized grippy boys in my cars. They automatically grab the phone when I place it in the cradle, hold the phone solidly in place and charge the phone as I drive, and with the tap of a button they let go.

I usually pair them with a 6" USB cable with a 90 degree end so it doesn't hang straight down.

But I usually make a custom mount that bolts the 17mm ball, that the phone cradle snaps onto, firmly into the dash. But the Jag presents a challenge. There's little dash space to elegantly mount the ball, and even if there was I didn't want to drill into it.

So instead I 3D printed this plastic mount that clamps onto the HSH, while doing so high enough that the passenger can still use the handle. It has slits in it so I could pass velcro cable ties through to pull it snug so it won't slide down or unclip unexpectedly. This is a first go, using a file I found online. I already have ideas on how to modify it so there's more range of motion for the cradle to tilt to other desired angles.

Excellent solution, and looks great.

BUT - my OCD flared up to an 11 out of 10 looking at your dashboard lol. You need to keep a swiffer duster in your glovebox!

Cheers,

I have a white cat who manages to coat every bit of clothing I own in his fur, which follows me. 5 minutes after getting the car detailed it'd look like that again.

I feel your pain there, I have two Saint Bernards. Their hair gets everywhere, including inside my F Type from time to time.

Or just use CarPlay/AndroidAuto and leave the phone in your pocket on in the console.

Cheers,
Yeah, me too. I keep a Swiffer in my glove box just for that light coating of dust that appears once in a while.

That's been my solution for three years now. I wish I had done it sooner.
