Default Battery Vent tube

Have new Battery from Advanced Auto. Battery is sealed. Does not appear to have a vent tube hole but there is a hole on the ends. Should I connect to this hole?

The vent hole is "usually" on one end or both.

They sometimes have a sealing plug that needs removing first.

Remove one plug, fit your vent arrangement, leave the other plug insitu.

An OE Jaguar battery is supplied plugged at both ends with the vent pipe adaptor in a separate packet to avoid damage in transit. The left hand plug can be seen here arrowed in red. The right hand is also plugged but this one is not visible in the photo:

Here the left hand plug has been removed and the vent pipe adaptor with vent pipe fitted (arrowed in blue). The right hand is left plugged (arrowed in red):

If your replacement battery is a 'wet' lead acid type then it must be vented to prevent build up of potentially explosive gas in the luggage compartment.

Just to illustrate the type of mechanical prowess and corporate efficiency we've all come to expect nowadays.

When I removed the bad battery from my X308, the supplied vent tube fitting was still in its little plastic bag taped to the battery, and the vent tube was lying on the trunk floor next to it.

My new "big box store" battery came with instructions to install the fitting, but no parts.

It must have had a replacement battery before .......?

Jaguars are shipped with the battery fitted and a Transit Relay connected to prevent discharge during shipping.

When the Dealer carries out the PDI (Pre Delivery Inspection), the Transit Relay is removed and the lead for it is tucked away out of site. This mysterious lead is a frequent question on the forum from new owners checking their vehicle. They find the lead and wonder what it missing!

Oh yeah, it was an aftermarket brand from one of the US parts houses.
Probably one of several this car has used in the past 17 years.
I didn't mean to imply it was a factory or dealer screwup.

I've noticed the abundance of threads about it.
Well, I guess the fact that the owners would notice and inquire about it is a good thing.

Jaguar never made them. They just buy them in, mark them up a lot.

Easy to buy ones with the vent hole.

The OE batteries from Jaguar are VARTA brand made in Germany.

Battery Vent tube-battery.jpg

For many years the cases were opaque white but changed to black around 2011.

VARTA case design has changed with the introduction of their 'Blue Dynamic' range:

This would account for the old P/N showing as NLA (No Longer Available) from Jaguar.

It was VARTA. This German company has been OE battery supplier to Jaguar for many years.

Nothing on the labelling to show their name but I recall it was discretely stamped onto the case.

Yes, I can confirm that the OEM batteries are Varna.
