Default Oil change

Disclaimer: I am not mechanically inclined that is why I need all the help I can get from all of you knowledgeable ladies and gents here in this forum.

The 1999 XJ8 that I recently bought has a sticker on the windshield that says - next oil change June 24, 2017.

I am assuming this never happened since the sticker was not replaced with one that has a more recent date.

Can I bring it to just any local shop for oil change? Like in a GM dealership? Or local Meineke? Or any local mechanic?

What is the appropriate oil to use? Should I buy it and bring it to the shop or will they have it available there?

Thanks.

Anyone competent can change it but GM likely won't have (thus won't use) the right oil.

An oil change isn't difficult and any shop should be able to do it for you. Many will have suitable oil but most will not have the appropriate oil filter.

The important considerations are:

1. use a premium quality oil - BRAND is not the important factor

2. 5W/30 is the recommended VISCOSITY unless operating in extremes of temperature

3. SPECIFICATION should meet or exceed API SJ / EC and ILSAC GF-2

4. equally important is the OIL FILTER which should be changed at the same time. Jaguar Part Number is EAZ1354. The Jaguar filter has a non-return valve so it doesn't drain back into the oil pan when the vehicle is parked up. This ensures rapid build up of oil pressure on starting the engine, reducing wear. Aftermarket filters are available but some that will fit don't have a non-return valve. If you go aftermarket filter, ask the question.

5. at the end of all that - renew the windshield sticker.

Default Where to buy online

Thanks for all the replies.

What is the best place to buy online for the oil filter? FCP Euro? Rock auto? Partsgeek?

Where can I buy an original gas tank cap?

Thanks.

Both JagV8 and I are in England so not really able to give advice on the best parts sources for you. Check our forum Sponsors and Vendors as they discount most OE Jaguar items.

Default Where to get the oil and filter? Which one? How much?

Are any of these oils good? If so, which one should I get? How much do I need?

Will the mechanics be okay if I bring my own oil and oil filter? One mechanic here got irritable when I said I can buy the parts inline and I have the codes interpreted by forum friends.

Are any of these oil filters okay? Or is the Jaguar oil filter still better?

Where is the best place to buy?

Are the oils and filter available at O’Reilly’s or AAP or Autozone?

Or should I buy them online? If so, where?

Or should I just bring my car to the Jaguar dealership? How much will it cost for an oil change there? It will most likely be pricier. Just want to know.

Thanks.

Default Saw a video tutorial

I think I can do this.

But for future reference, which online store is reputable for parts?

Can you buy parts from your local stores?

Which oil brand do most of you buy?

Thanks

As a ballpark for oil filter costs, forum Sponsor S N G Barratt list Jaguar OE at $22.19 and an aftermarket equivalent at $6.82:

I believe you are overthinking this and entering analysis-paralysis.

Right now you just want to get the oil and filter changed out. If you're not going to do it yourself, which is normal, take it to the shop that you believe will be handling all work on this car going forward. Have them change it. Specify synthetic, if thats what you want. (I prefer the longer change intervals synthetic offers) If the shop does not have the right filter on hand, they'll get it, quickly. Many shops have part deliveries multiple times a day. Theres a whole submarket for parts stores to supply shops with the right parts. No shop can carry it all.

Now you're done with it.

After that, if you want to research oil and filters, please go through the historical posts on x308 forum (or whichever model your car belongs to) and also "Bob Is The Oil Guy" forums, or bitog.com (you'll undoubtedly see references to that)

Good luck!

I'm sorry, but if you feel the need to over think this process to the extent you have, you probably shouldn't attempt it yourself.

Default Oil filter

Is PG5317 an okay alternative to EAZ1354? The shop won’t allow me to bring my own oil filter.

Thanks guys. No I won’t do it myself. And yes maybe I am over analyzing but I just want to be sure with the parts and specs before I go.
