Coming apart
Not much of an update, but I have been dismantling the car in preparation for some heavier mods. I will keep it rolling until I have done the 2 door conversion. I figure if I screw this up then I can still roll it onto a trailer and to the scrap yard.
The most disgusting part so far was removing the headliner. Fifty years of disintegrating jute etc. made for some serious dust.
I still haven't found any significant rust. Even the jacking points still have the rubber bungs in them.
I do have one rear bumper bolt that won't move. I will let it soak for a few days then try again.
The tank came out without a fight, but it still had a couple of gallons of very sour brown gas in it. The tank will not be re-used anyway. I plan to replace the tank and spare wheel well with a modern tank.
Interesting differences when compared to an American car. Particularly the front end structure. The entire front clip from a Camaro or similar is held on with a handful of bolts. This thing is built like a tank with that heavy steering and suspension mini subframe. Which in turn only seems to be glued on with four little bolts and rubber spacers.
My car has a power steering box. I didn't think many of them came that way.
I do like the handbrake mechanism. Again, heavy and a bit over engineered, but I might try and keep that.
Lots of sound deadening. I would say that Dynamat is not a new invention.
