Default Eliminate air intake muffler on Mark 1

I want to reroute the air intake so that the muffler doesn't hide the engine on my 19549 3.8 liter Mark 1. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Pictures attached.

It's a 65-year-old car in reasonable original condition so don't stuff around with changing the intake muffler/air cleaner system.
These Mk1s are steadily gaining in value and originality is the name of the game.
One interesting non original point is that spring attached to the intake plenum, presumably assisting the throttle return.

Thanks Bill. I've made a couple of modiifications since I drive the car often: i.e. fuel injection, power steering. I still have the old parts if the next owner is a purist. I'll leave the air intake alone, It's not pretty but works well.

The standard air cleaner/silencer boxes are not exactly attractive and hide the cam covers. If your car is the later type where the big tin can is only a muffler, you could improve the aesthetics by replacing it with an aluminium pipe of a diameter to match the plenum. It wouldn't completely uncover the top of the engine, but would look better. And it avoids cutting holes in the right hand inner wing.

I'd not follow the obvious route of replacing the plenum and everything upstream of it with a pair of pancake air filters, as most versions don't filter very well.

was that style air cleaner used in the MK-1 ?

I thought it was used only in the 1963-1968 S type and 420.

Jose,
It's in my 1959 Mark 1. The U.S. version (3.4 liter).

No, it's the standard 3.4 liter engine for the Mark 1 in the U.S., while the English version was a 2.4 litre; the same engine with a shorter stroke.

That air intake system is pretty standard for a MK1 3.4.(I have owned four of them.)
The air intake system was totally different on the MK1 2.4. It had 1&1/4 inch solex downdraft carbies and there is no way it could be confused with a 3.4 system. (I have owned two of them.)

ok, (again), I thought those AC air cleaner "mufflers" were used later in the S type and 420. Didn't know about the MK-1.
