Default Are many parts on the 420 and the S type interchangeable

Hello all. I think I have the possibility of getting a 1968 420 with several bits and pieces that may be useful on my 1964 S type. Including a PAS setup. It has been suggested that I simply swap the front end from the 420 onto the S type. Obviously I would need to figure out a way to get a power steering pump operational on the S type. But I am wondering what other parts (generally speaking) are interchangeable between the two cars eg woodwork, trim, windows, doors etc. I believe the 4.2L motor is in pretty good condition. Does the manual gearbox used in the S type simply bolt straight onto the 4.2L engine?
Thanks for any advice or opinions you can offer.

Hi Wouldbeowner,
The 420 is basically an updated S-type so, the sheetmetal from the cowl (dash panel) back is the same. The 420 has a safety IP (padded) due to the USA safety laws. But the rest of the interior is pretty much the same. I believe the trans should bolt right up.

Hope this helps,
Bob

If you can get that car at the right price it could be very useful to you. Swap over the the whole front sub assembly, cross member & all for the newer brakes, ball joints, Varamatic PAS. The Varamatic PS can run off of either the Hobourn Eaton S Type PS pump or the 420's Saginaw pump so your choice on generator or alternator & earthing. Engine might be less worn than your existing & has a viscous fan. Car is the same from screen back other than dash & later model door cards with padded roll. Early 420's had the S Type door wood. Later just a thin wood garnish strip on top of doors.

Body scuttle forward no good to you ~ Wings, bonnet, lights, grill, bumper, horn grills etc no good. Radiator is crossflow & I don't think fits.

Gives you the option to swap over dual circuit brakes from 420. Lots of useful spares. Transmission, clutch, rear axle/IRS etc all swap over. Not sure which axle ratio that car had & whether LS. Jag did some messing around on those final cars.

If you arn't bothered about originally you can use a modern electric power steering pump although you really need to convert the car to an alternator to drive it.

Over in the UK a few of the conversions use the Vauxhall Astra pump setup.

If you want to check individual part numbers to see if they are the same between the S type and 420 have a look at this site. https://parts.jaguarlandroverclassic...le-information
It has the heritage parts catalogues for all the Jaguar saloon models and I often use it to compare part numbers or to look up part numbers when selling odd spares on E bay.

Thanks for all the replies. The same gentleman that has the 420 for sale also a complete PAS system for the 1964 S type. While i would love the complete car the simple fact is that i have nowhere to put it - absolutely nowhere - and i was mainly interested in the front end with the varamatic PAS. The complete steering unit is a quarter the price so i think i will go that direction

Understood. That's likely the Type 2 PAS system with the torsion bar operated quill valve on the input shaft to improve feel. What I have.
